Well, then at least the name "Street Hero" should remind you of the greatest Rokeby horse of all-time (aside from Red Ransom), Sea Hero, who took the '93 Kentucky Derby and Travers.

Yep. Sea Hero now stands at stud in Turkey. Bailey acts like a Turkey on TV.

I'd rather read 300 pages of Beatle Bailey comic strips.

By the way, did he charge you for the autograph?

I hated Sea Hero.. likely because of Bailey, but for whatever reason. I've always felt he was the luckiest 'big race' winner ever. And why there is a statue of him in the Saratoga paddock continues to escape my comprehension. Of all the Travers winners in history, Sea Hero gets a monument in the Spa enclosure?

That has to be brought up in any discussion of Sea Hero or of the Travers paddock. Always perplexed me too. In that Lost in the Fog movie, Harry Aleo walks by it and goes "Sea Hero.. He wasn't that good."

Didnt Paul Mellon donate it to the racetrack?

If they had to pay for it themselves.. I doubt it would be there..

We still have the 1993 Derby poster hanging in our living room.

Aside from the Mellon items added above, I think it's because Sea Hero was the first (or at least first in several decades) to complete the Derby - Travers double.

I think Sea Hero is the only horse in history to win the Champagne, Kentucky Derby, and Travers. He was 8-1, 13-1, and 6-1 in each of those contests, which aside from the BC Juvenile and the other Triple Crown races were the only races of consequence he ran in. He won each of those by open lengths, too. When he chose to fire, he was at the top of that mediocre crop of horses.

None of that means he needs a statue in his honor, but he by no means should be lumped in with a bunch of one-hit wonders like Frost Giant, Wagon Limit, or Ah-Ha...

What future Grade 1 winner was Sea Hero coupled with in his final career start? (the 1994 Fayette at Keeneland)

Key Contender. The fact that Sea Hero failed to finish in front of his less fancied stablemate (he won his Grade 1 for someone else after being sold by Rokeby) prompted Mack Miller to retire him immediately.

Personally, though I don't think he would have been some top older horse, I think Sea Hero's 4yo campaign was hindered by all the turf starts, when the year before, Miller had been so patient with allowing him to "round to form" for his biggest engagements as a 3yo in spite of less-than-stellar efforts in prep races like the Palm Beach and Jim Dandy. After getting lit up by Devil His Due in the Brooklyn early as a 4yo, it was as if had no hope of winning on dirt again, unfortunately he couldn't get it done on turf either.

Yup, very good, it was Key Contender, he won the Suburban in 1995.. for Flying Zee Stable and Jose Martin.

Sea Hero was always a very tough one to figure out... the only race he was good enough to win after the Travers was an off the turf sprint..
