I'm not comparing him to Empire Maker, and you know I would bet against this kind of hype in a heartbeat, I was just giving an example of an unraced horse that got a ton of hype before he ever started. Of course, you could also cite the Green Monkey, but that's kind of a different story.

the thing with the green monkey is no one ever, to my memory, every hyped him as being good.

probably the two horses i remember recently as super hyped horses well before they started were the aforementioned empire maker and vindication.

Unbridled Song was a HUGE hype horse before running. I think he was scratched out of a Monmouth maiden race before showing up at Saratoga.

He was a $1 million buyback at the 2YO sale ( I feel like it was Barretts ) which at that time was HUGE.

all three of those horses won like something good as well, vindication broke slow from the rail, rushed up and was cut off, waited and slid around the horse who cut him off to draw away at will. unbridled's song probably won the easiest just crushing from the onset, and if i remember empire song was stuck outside and was wide while starting at a mile, never an easy thing to do.

Empire Maker's race, however, turned into one of the great negative key races of all time. Everyone wanted to bet back anyone who lost to the supposed mighty one.....and they came back to run like garbage, one after another, from what I remember.

Unbridled Song was the real deal. What a horse he could have been.

A pair of Drysdale two year olds come to mind when thinking of hyped of horses prior to their debuts.

AP Indy and FuPeg.

I also remember Lukas, moments after buying a full sibling to Terlingua, proclaiming she was so perfect, it looked like she could go out there right now and run 1:09. This was as a yearling! I think she sold for about 1.9 million. She didn't do much.

one of the best horses FuPeg ever beat was in that mdn race, and it was not by much.

I was there for his maiden score... 11-years-old, but I remember it like it were yesterday. I attended my first Breeders' Cup later that year when he out-gamed Hennessy (and of course Cigar later won). And when he turned for home with the lead in the Derby, I went nuts. He was definitely one of my all-time favorites.

ya he is my all-time favorite... the reason I started following horse racing when I was 12.

Who knows how much better my life would be had that not happened!

It's amazing he was able to accomplish what he did.. considering how he was handled.. I remember after he won the Juvenile, Paragallo said without a doubt he was the next triple crown winner.

Here's his maiden race... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1q5iovTCxwE

Boy, I hope Seattleallstar unloads on this colt (and tells us he's doing so before hand) so we will know he's a cinch to bet-against!
