But I think the powers-at-be should spend the vast majority of their time trying to figure out how to make this sport better for those of us that ALREADY follow (and bet on) it, rather than devoting a lot of time trying to figure out how they can make some teenager switch from poker to horse racing simply through a clever marketing campaign.

Its true the sport needs to focus on people that are actually betting on the sport but the truth is the majority of these people will not be around in 15 years...new blood is needed for horse racing to succeed again, either getting younger kids introduced to the sport or getting 20-30 year olds to the track for the first time would help to get new money into the sport. (younger kids money would come later of course but could be in the sport for many years) Along with that the poker craze I think is helping to kill the sport too.
