Imperialism Retired to Florida's Get Away Farm
by Margaret Ransom

Steve Taub's three-time grade II winner Imperialism has been retired and sold, trainer Kristin Mulhall revealed Saturday, and will take up stud duty at Get Away Farm in Ocala, Fla., for the 2007 breeding season.

The 5-year-old son of Langfuhr hasn't hit the board in five starts since winning the Pat O'Brien Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. II) at Del Mar nearly a year ago.

"He retires perfectly sound," Mulhall said. "He just wasn't as into racing as he used to be so we decided it was time."

Imperialism, a gray son of the Pass the Tab mare Bodhavista, began his career in Florida, then was purchased privately by Taub before the 2004 Triple Crown. In his first start in Taub's colors, Imperialism won the San Vicente Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita, followed by the San Rafael Stakes (gr. II). After a second-place finish via disqualification in the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) Imperialism became the first Kentucky Derby (gr. I) starter for Mulhall, then 21. He finished a game third behind eventual champion Smarty Jones and grade I winner Lion Heart.

He also finished second in the 2005 Strub Stakes (gr. II) and third in the 2004 Hollywood Derby (gr. IT). From 29 starts overall, Imperialism won six times, with five seconds and three thirds, for earnings of $899,772.

"I'm going to miss him, definitely," Mulhall said. "He was my first 'big' horse and he was special in a lot of ways. But I'll be sending mares to him and will have some Imperialism babies in a couple of years, so that's good."

Imperialism is set to leave Mulhall's shedrow bound for Florida on Tuesday. A stud fee has yet to be determined.
