Besides finding out who won and lost ... you can't learn a damn thing from a box score....

The major exception being hockey in the regular season.

The box score lists the exact times that the fights happened - and when all the satellite channels show the replays of the games - I'd try to tune in and catch as many as I can.

I would much rather play a race with 14 first time starters than a turf sprint where the whole field has established form and I have no such sneaky horse.

Very true. YET, there are many out there playing races by doing 'calculations' of data that claim they not only are successful BUT also know the game.

So, why wouldn't I know more about these sports by crunching data than the guys spending 20 hours a day in the film room or those out there scouting the opposition? Imagine all the money that these franchises could save by emulating the PA model.

Not to be a di ck, and I know you're also kidding around, but that's kind of my point about these races.....they're fool's gold. They suck us in because we feel like a detective hunting around for clues and in reality they are the ultimate guessing game ( unless you are genuinely connected to actually good information ) and these races are a losing proposition. But....they suck you in.

I expect our differing opinions about these races probably relate to our different reasons for handicapping races in the first place. I enjoy feeling like "a detective hunting around for clues" because I am a small-time/part-time player who treats the game as a hobby. If I lose a lot of the time, it isn't a big deal because I rarely make large wagers. For me it is just a thing I dabble in for fun (with the possible exception of the Arlington meet, which I take rather seriously).
For someone like you that depends on picking winners for a living, I imagine the kind of speculation involved in betting a race full of firsters is understandably far less appealing.
