Well not sure how much has been said here but if y'all were talking the same story I'm aware of it's essentially that they bought him privately beforehand for much much cheaper (well compared to $16 mil) and got into a fake p*ssing contest with the Dubai folks just to go 'oh oh see, I just whipped out $16 mil without even blinking' but the $8 mil or even cheaper is the ballpark figure for the real price of "the Monkey." I'll see if I can hunt up the play by play as I was told. It might take a minute to search the right message board. Of course it's all "alleged" if you know what I mean. Eh.

Ah ha, found it. Courtesy of Pedigree Query's forum:

Quote:
It is whispered that Demi O'Byrne bought the horse outside, before the sale, for somewhere between $4-5 million, and the Coolmore gang, for want of a term, ran him through the sale and up as high as he could go. Their purpose was to basically smack Sheikh Mohammed upside the head and "prove" they were the winners. He could not have bought the horse at any price. Perhaps it is poetic justice, then, that they will not see a penny of their $4-5 million.

Regardless of their intent, their schoolyard behavior amounted to a public humiliation for Sheikh Mohammed. This caused an otherwise gracious (in public anyhow) ruler to retaliate. At the Keeneland September yearling sale, Sheikh Mohammed spent $57 million on yearlings, and not a Coolmore-sired horse among them. The gauntlet was thrown and the message to breeders was clear... to avoid Coolmore stallions if you expect to sell your equine offspring for anything like their real value. It was even remarked on in the trade publications covering the sale.

Sheikh Mohammed has been a player for a very long time, and his brother, Sheikh Maktoum before him.

not that i will ever understand such things, but why would the sheikh be humiliated by losing out on such an overpriced piece of forestry?

i think, on every possible level, it makes coolmore look stupid. 16 mil or 4-5 mil, pulling a fast one or not pulling a fast one.

There's a lot of nonsense that seems to go on at these sales with the final price.

However, if Hartly and Derenzio (sp?) sell the horse secretly for $4-to-$5 million one day, and the next day they sell the horse for $16 million, wouldn't that amount to about $11 million-to-$12 million extra in taxes for them to pay?

If this happened, I'm sure Tabor's group would have to cover those taxes.

I assume the attention that comes with the gigantic final purchase price might offset the few million dollars in extra taxes if the horse turns out to be a Grade 1 winner.

I don't exactly understand why Hartly and DeRenzio would willingly sell a horse for $4 million - when the Maktoums are willing to bid in excess of $15 million for said horse.

I have no idea what could have went on. The horse was an expensive yearling and he had to really sucker some people in with that very fast blinkered furlong work at the worlds most prestegious 2yo sale.
