If a trainer wants to dodge the competition by going in an easier spot then thats fine. But, if they enter a horse then scratch after entries are taken w/o valid excuse(like an injury), then the trainer should be fined. IMO this would limit trainers from entering and then scratching b/c the race came up too tough for their horse.

Exactly how much of a fine would be a deterent?
Do you know how easy it is to come up with a valid excuse?

I was looking at the PPs for tomorrow's third race. Who scratches: Argentina or Wingspan?

Not sure on amt. of the fine and valid excuse should be backed up by a vet or steward.

Not trying to change the industry, just tired of seeing trainers scratch horses b/c of weights, post, pace, etc.

If you don't have deterrents in place, trainers like Frankel will enter and then scratch b/c his horse is giving up too much weight. (just an example)
That way we don't end up w/ Graded Stakes w/ 5 horse fields, due to scratches.

I guess i'm just venting frustration..sorry

No reason to be sorry. But a $250 fine won't keep a guy from scratching especially out of a stake. You do forfeit your entry fee when you scratch out of a stake without a valid medical reason though and those are in the thousands sometimes. Of course it comes out of the owners account not the trainer.

True, how about too many scratches = automatic suspension, say 2 weeks, wouldn.t that be a laugh

You would have a lot more horses developing temperatures

with the increases in handle, the money from slots...why aren't the top purses rising?
two networks that didn't exist a few years ago....coverage (albeit sporadic) on espn, etc....

so why don't the top purses go up? there have been across the board increases, yet the tops don't move an inch.

is it that the other races are the ones that sustain much of the industry?

there needs to be an incentive to run the best vs the best. trick is finding that incentive, and being able to afford it.

how valuable are eclipse awards to a horses future earnings in the shed? what if it was on a points system, rather than a vote? then those who dance the dances get rewarded, rather than a few that get votes based on name recognition.
