Wow what a horse. Talent, class, and some serious guts (and drop dead gorgeous, just a perfect face). The thing is Curlin's got talent and class sure, and he could get the mile and a half in good order too, but she won because she was better. I love those races. Neck and neck and the best horse wins. You go Rags! And congrats to Todd and John on their first TC race!

Not to hijack this thread, but I really have a "thing" for big chestnut fillies with a big white blaze on their face. Today I got back from the farm where we're training my 2yo filly, Shot o' Bourbon. She's accepted tack, being ponied, bath, lunge, and next week, rider up. Oh...I should tell you who she could be a sister to, but you wouldn't believe me. Gosh, I love those fillies. DTS |

Great day for the sport in general. A day that was needed. Rags was tough as nails down the stretch, what a race! I'm not a big Pletcher fan, but his call to put this filly in the Triple Crown was a master stroke and he deserves some credit for that.

Well now we know, this isn't a very good filly, this is a great filly! First filly to EVER win the Belmont at 12 furlongs and she beat a very very good horse. Sure the 5 pounds helped but the stumble at the start and racing wide eliminated any weight advantage imo. The extremely slow pace didn't help her either! Now you have to wonder...could she have contended for the TC? Impossible to know but she proved she's as good as any 3yo today. Congrats to Pletcher...they talked about irony, what they didn't mention (at least while I was watching) was that Pletcher's mentor, DWL ended his long winless TC streak by winning with a filly! Great day for racing!

Told some guys on another board that all this chatter about Slew's Tizzy and Crazy Guy was hooey. Class tells at a distance of ground, and the filly, Curlin and Hard Spun were a class above the others. (IMHO, Gomez blew Hard Spun's only chance by not letting him open on the field. He had to have more than a length on the class closers at the top of the stretch to have any chance. I know, I know, Pino moves too soon, Gomez moves too late, it's always something. He's still a class horse.)

I hope people don't get too carried away and talk about her like she's an all-time great filly...and certainly this was no all-time great training job.
Rags to Riches simply belonged in this race....last out, she ran an identical speed figure to what older male Wanderin Boy earned---while over the same track, on the same day, with the more difficult trip of the two. Which assured she'd be in this race--regardless of whoelse did or didn't show. From a pedigree standpoint, she projected for major improvement on the three furlong stretchout in distance....as she's by the #1 dirt racing distance sire in the game---and out of tremendously stamina laden female family. She owned a gigantic edge in pedigree over Curlin for the distance---and, getting five pounds in weight over 12 furlongs didn't hurt either. Don't get me wrong---she certainly enhanced her standing with her performance today...but not as much as people seem to be acting. I've liked her a lot all along---but I just hope people don't get carried away. |
