What a fantastic day of racing that was at Belmont on Saturday. Thank you, Ruffian, for making such a good selection. It was enjoyable to see Tacitus return to the winner's circle after so many frustrating losses, and to watch Vekoma bravely hang on despite numerous challenges.
If you were seeking any kind of a price, it was not the day for you. David Aragona, who creates the morning line for NYRA, was correct with 9 out of 11 morning line favorites ending up in the winner's circle, and Social Paranoia at 4-1 being the biggest so-called price play of the day. I was delighted to hit the early pick 4 only to find the payoff to be, to put it kindly, less than generous. The early pick 5 wasn't much better. But that's simply one of the risks that a player of multi leg wagers assumes - some days you face a parade of favorites that everyone else also has and you don't cover your original wager. That doesn't detract from a very enjoyable afternoon of racing. And next Saturday we could be treated to Keeneland in July.
