The two pacesetters ran slower than the rest of the field in the second quarter mile of the race, in part because Perez entered the first turn 3 wide while carrying Nyquist 4 wide, both losing the advantage of saving ground and running the entire second quarter wider than necessary. The damage had been done in the first quarter.

I feel it's too easy to use 20/20 hindsight to place blame after the fact. Let's say for a minute that Gutierrez had eased back 12 seconds into the race, sensing the pace was too fast. He got a great start, making it all the more difficult to strangle his mount enough to ease inside of Lino, and had he attempted that it may have looked even more questionable. I don't think his position was a win/win type.
