I'd say it's more about his perfect transfer of energy from the hindquarters, through the spine, and out through the front, than it is his musculature, but he is an impressive looker.

Check out Sports Illustrated's website. They have 21 pictures from the Belmont and the action shots are nice. One with all 4 hooves in the air as he ran.

I resorted to eBay and found a picture from each race at about the same point (wire with victor doing almost the same gesture each time). I want to have a series framed with all three legs.

I will try to post a picture when I get them all framed and hung.

muscles have nothing to do with your reply, I know. And the fact that his stride in long the Secretariat's was and he therefore stays in the air longer than most.

Staying in the air is BAD.

When a horse is entirely in the air, they are slowing down.

There's a guy on Twitter who posted photos of all the newspaper headlines and photos from across the nation. Pretty neat stuff. I'll search his handle tonight when I have time.

I'm sure it is a direct result of his stride. But lest we get into horse mechanics and physiology, he is efficient as hell when he runs.
