![]() St.Louis-Billionaire horse owner Jess Jackson today purchased the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team for an undisclosed sum. His first order of business was forcing Cardinals All Star 1st baseman Albert Pujols to retire, stating that it was "obvious that Albert hadn't recaptured his 2009 form," and he had earned the right to,"have a stress-free life". Pujols who is likely to finish 2nd in the MVP voting announced at the end of the season, has won the award the past 2 seasons. His numbers as a 30 year old (.312/42/118) dipped a bit this year off of last years monstrous season (.327/47/135), yet were still better than virtually everyone else in baseball.
"As a 29 year old, Albert set standards and records that no player before him ever achieved, and I suspect it will be quite a while before a 29 year old player ever equals or surpasses his achievements," Jackson said. "Although Alberts' fans were thrilled by a series of spectacular seasons, I believe they, as we, were simply awed time and again by his sheer beauty, courage, athleticism and VORP." Since he is still under contract to the Cardinals, Pujols won't likely be able to comment as all Cardinal employees are bound by a media gag order imposed by Jackson.
