Default Breathalyzer tests in works at NYRA

horsemen at NYRA tracks will be required to take random Breathalyzer tests in the coming weeks.

The program implemented by the New York Racing Association will include assistant starters and those who pony thoroughbreds to the gate.

NYRA still is in the process of creating policies and procedures for the program, but it is expected to begin within the next week to 10 days once a newly purchased Breathalyzer arrives. Campo said testing would not be on a set schedule.

"I think if you do it daily then it doesn't become random; if you do it every day the guys know when you're going to do it," he said. "If every assistant starter knows you're going to test them at 12 o'clock before the races, you don't know what they're doing after that. So I think you have to keep it as random as possible. It could be throughout the day, it could be before the races start, it could be after the fifth race."
