They were not persecuted for WHAT THEY BELIEVED.

I lived with a Jewish family for basically 5 years thru
middle school to high school when my mom was ill.

Go to Israel and make the statement you just made, and you
will get laughed out of the country. They have huge conflicts between
the ultra-orthodox religious Jews and the cultural reform Jews who dont
like this religion shoved down their throat. It even happens in this country.
