If you meant the mitochondrial DNA, well I'm certainly no expert, but seeing how mitochondria are responsible for energy production via the utilization of oxygen, I'd imagine some genius in a lab coat with a few hundred lab rats to "euthanize" on the edge of a countertop later that afternoon came up with the brilliant idea that "good" mitochondrial (passed on by superior dams) would be "gooder" at using oxygen and making horsey go faster to win...
