DMSO is Dimethyl-Sulfoxide... it's typically used on horses that are a bit sore or arthritic. It really helps to relieve inflammation. It penetrates the skin so quickly that if the person putting it on gets it on themselves (literally), they can taste it in their mouth. It tastes disgusting... almost sulfur like.

When you can smell it permeating off of a horse walking by, it's probably not a very good sign that the horse is very sound. (At least that's been my experience with it.)
