It was refreshing to see that the Washington Post actually got it for once:

I guess the mainstream media would have all been bashing Harry Truman. They have no understanding of diplomacy. Do they actually think that Truman or Trump thought their Russian counterparts were great guys? Both Truman and Trump knew who they were dealing with. Truman knew Stalin was a murderous monster. But Truman knew he still had to deal with him. When you have no choice but to do business with someone, you have to try to get along with them. If you say a bunch of nasty things about them and treat them with disrespect, you are only stabbing yourself in the foot. You will kill your chances of having successful negotiations.

I'm not saying Trump necessarily did everything right. I'm simply saying that there is nothing wrong with Trump being cordial and complimentary towards Putin. That is just part of diplomacy.
