UPDATE! Holy reel-to-reel! I left "Kane" off the list... It's almost more of a 'document', like the Declaration of Independence, than a film...

1. Casablanca
2. GWTW
3. The Godfather, Part II
Citizen Kane (tie)
4. The Bicycle Thief
5. Raging Bull
6. The Godfather
7. The Philadelphia Story
8. Sweet Smell of Success
9. Terms of Endearment
10. La Dolce Vida

JFK made you think? The only thing I thought after seeing that was I wonder how many drugs Oliver Stone had in his system when he made that movie.

Hard to leave out Pulp Fiction.
D/P..

Raging Bull on the list! Some film historians feel a case can be made that Scorsese has made the Best Film of the 70's (Mean Streets), 80's (Raging Bull) and the 90's (GoodFellas)...

It is tough to exclude Pulp Fiction...

Check out the cinematic chops on the Pais...

I had 'Birth of a Nation' on the list initially but left it off in the final analysis...

Films like the Griffith classic (1918?), Fritz Lang's films (Metropolis (1929), M (1930), etc., from the earliest periods in cinema (pre-Depression) are difficult to include on popular lists.

'Triumph of the Will', and all of Leni Reifenstahl's work has a whole other set of issues that I won't address here.

All of the these are perhaps best placed on a list of Most Important Films or Most Influential Films.

"M" is one of the greatest films you'll ever see and has been liberally drawn from for decades. See "Dark City" as soon as you can if you appreciate German Existential film...

Number 1 on my list will always remain the same....the rest will vary, so I put them in no particular order

1. The Shawshank Redemption ("I believe in two things; discipline and the bible. Put your trust in the Lord, your ass belongs to me. Welcome to Shawshank.")

the rest:

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
PulpFiction
Goodfellas
Braveheart
Gladiator
The Elephant Man
Full Metal Jacket
Of Mice and Men
Friday

I can't believe I left that one off my list...I get upset just thinking about that movie...I saw it once and will never watch it again...brilliant adaptation of an incredible book.

makes one think...and generally regarded as a phenomenal work..in spite of the subject matter, an important film.

and they can be important and influential and STILL be on this list...because it is a PERSONAL list of films that made me think...

OK, this is impossible! Far to many...and I agree with everybody's list so far with the possible exception of Clockwork Orange...never cared for that movie, I think it was psuedo-intellectual crap...but, to be fair, a lot of my friends love it so it's probably just me! Again, I don't claim these are the "best" merely my favorites:
10) The Godfather (I put them together)
9) Casablanca
8) Caddyshack
7) Underworld (both 1 & 2...as with the Godfather)
6) The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai
5) The Highlander (again, all together)
4) One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
3) Cruel Intentions
2) Blade Runner
1) Serenity

Reifenstahl, who only passed away in the last couple of years, was a remarkable woman. And an immense talent at virtually every endeavor she undertook including deep sea diving/underwater photography while in her 70's.

I have no issue with Reifenstahl's craft, or the brilliance of 'Triumph' and 'Olympia' from a technical/artistic standpoint. But her utter refusal to fully acknowledge her role in the buildup of the pre-war Reich dooms her place in film history. It is not entirely different from Elia Kazan NEVER living down the "naming of names" during the HUAC hearings/Blacklist era. It's a lasting tarnish that skews the appreciation for the artist.

Hi guys! I have been laid up for a bit between work and throwing my back out, I haven't been on the computer much lately. Now keep in mind, this is just my opinion and I have an odd taste in movies, they may not be the best critic wise, but they are movies that I will watch again and again and I own every single one on DVD.

1. The Black Stallion (in my opinion will always be #1)

2. The Shawshank Redemption (this movie is awesome and I will always leave it on if I see it on TV)

3. Sixteen Candles. (I SOOOO HAD A CRUSH ON JAKE RYAN)

4. The Cutting Edge (ok, I like romantic comedies. I admit it, but I LOVE this movie and I will also admit that I saw it in the theater THREE TIMES)

5. Pretty Woman (I also admit that I have many quotes from this movie that I use all the time!)

6. The Waterboy (this movie makes me laugh and laugh again. I probably know this movie word for word. My fave Adam Sandler movie.)

7. Clueless (also made me laugh and how many of us women use the saying "AS IF!")

8. Seabiscuit (loved the book and I loved the movie.)

9. The Breakfast Club (hee hee one of the girls at the barn told me a few weeks ago that she saw the BEST OLD MOVIE named "The Breakfast Club", how old did I feel?)

10. Caddyshack. (IT'S IN THE HOLE!)
