I thought Sun King would enter, but Zito is opting to train him up to the Classic.

Is he really? That is a shocker. I like this horse.

The horse only runs well every other race so might as well make his good race the big one.

He is my longshot pick for the classic.

Then you should root strongly for Wanderin Boy to run there.

I also love that move Zito made with him. I really like Sun King's chances to finish 1, 2, 3 in the Classic now since he will get a much needed rest. My super right now is Bernardini, Shirocco, Sun King, and Invasor. However, I really don't think that Shirocco will run in the Classic, and I don't know who I will use instead. My selections may change a lot before the race depending on how the JCGC and other races go. However, I am definitely going to use Sun King as long as he trains well up to the race, looks good in the saddling and pp, and enters the starting gate. I'm also waiting to see and make sure that Discreet Cat doesn't run in the Classic, although I highly doubt that he will.

I can see this horse running big in the BC. You have to figure at least one closer will make some noise and he is clearly the best closer of this handicap class. It wouldnt shock me if he won this race.

I would like SK more if he wasn't being trained up to it. That kind of break into the race isn't a good thing. You need a prep to be right. He trained Birdstone up to the race and he ran evenly at best that day.

Meanwhile he gave Albert a prep and even though he ran poorly in the prep, he came back to run a big race. A misstep by Zito here.

Well, let's talk about missteps when he loses. Who knows... maybe he'll win the thing.

I would normally agree with you, but I think Zito made the right move with this horse. The horse needs the break. Zito knows that he is tired. I won't say this often, but in this particular instance, I do like the fact that Zito is training up to the race instead of giving Sun King one more grueling race before the BC. The way I figure it is that Zito wouldn't be doing it without having a good reason.

The ideal would have been for him to have skipped either the Whitney or the Wooward, and put SK in the JCGC or similar prep, and the BCC.

He was favored, or co-favorite, in the $500K Grade 1 Woodward whereas he will be no less than 6-1, and probably closer to 10-1, should he run in the JCGC. I would say, even in retrospect, the Woodward was the right spot.

I think the break will do him wonders. Hes had a pretty staunt campaign this year (at least by his standards). The Whitney probably took a lot out of him. I thought his Woodward was great.

I agree Gander. The horse doesnt need a prep race. He has been prepping all year for this race. The horse has got to be fit and he will be the best rested horse come BC day. I will be amazed if Sun King is anything below 15-1.

i think training up will benefit sun king as well....he ran well in his last, in which many expected a bounce after his close call with invasor. well, if that was a bounce, he ran his eyeballs out! closed on a track that was playing to front runners...
i think sun king is a legit threat. he's been knocking on the door all year, last year as well. he could do the deed nov 4.
