![]() A real shock ...
He had a lot of moxie and spirit that probably cost him races, but he was some character and a good one. Too damn sad .. |

![]() Lawyer Ron ran in my first Super Derby here at LAD... Strong Contender got the best of him that day. But the Lawyer Ron of the following year would have the racey by 20. Sad news.

![]() The Lawyer Ron of that year would've hammered Weak Contender/Strong Pretender if not for a bozo ride. Yet, I wonder how much juice it took to get this guy to run the way he did under Pletcher. Too bad, nonetheless (it's not like the horse is injecting itself). Equine science needs to focus LESS on performance enhancement (i.e. DRUG) and MORE on how to better handle colic.

![]() Talk was that the switch to Pletcher was because the trainer wouldn't chuck the jock who thought it was a good idea to choke a horse who wanted to go faster. Old school fellow. Probably figured the jock learned something and wouldn't do it again. Not good enough for the new owners.
It is entirely possible that Ron just grew up some over the winter and started to settle down a bit, so he could use his talent to best effect. He really didn't want more than 9f, except around one turn, and when he stayed in his comfort zone, he could run with anybody. I'm sorry that we won't have but a couple of crops from such a gritty and durable performer. I was quite fond of him. |

![]() He was one of my favorites, even though I'd given up on him by Whitney Day (Sightseek remembers it well, I bet). What a bummer.

![]() RIP Ron.
His early career was quite interesting before he found dirt. One of my favorite people on "First Saturday in May" was Ron's groom - he was so proud of his Big Horse. |

![]() Another shocking loss for thoroughbred fans... I first saw Lawyer Ron while watching simulcast of Diamond Jo Stakes from Evangeline Downs. He ran an absolutely awesome race. In his next start, I witnessed his stellar victory in Risen Star Stakes conducted at Louisiana Downs after Hurricane Katrina moved Fair Grounds meet to Bossier City that season. From quarter pole to wire, he ran powerfully. One of the best performances that I had ever seen live. He proved he was something special sweeping the Southwest-Rebel-Arkansas Derby series at Oaklawn Park.
Unfortunately, his rank behavior was his undoing in 2006 Kentucky Derby. This same trouble would surface again in both of his Breeders' Cup Classic defeats. However, Lawyer Ron's true legacy is his magical 2007 Saratoga meet. Opening with his Whitney Handicap win and closing with his Woodward Stakes victory, he captured two of the summer's most prized Grade I races. This propelled him to Eclipse Award as outstanding older male. Rest in peace, Lawyer Ron, rest in peace. You brought joy to us fans that followed your too brief career.

![]() His campaign at Oaklawn was simply fantastic. Mr. Holthus had an assistant trainer on Ron at the time. Rising star Tim Glyshaw. RIP Lawyer Ron. You left us way too early.

This thread should continue to celebrate Lawyer Ron as champion thoroughbred who had many fans across America. When he was "on", he was one outstanding athlete.

![]() If he was juiced at Saratoga they would have caught it. He was pretty good before that.
