The fact of the matter is this shouldn't be a story. Doing the right thing should be a given. And if this is the reason why you love golf than you must love soap operas too.

That is the EXACT reason that it is and should be a story. Because it just isn't the norm in professional sports these days. And yes, it is one of the big reasons I love golf...because the honesty and integrity that still exists in the sport and the fact that players can be trusted to police themselves.

Soaps??GFY

Man.. I don't know.. I think he has great intergrity and all that.. but man...Thats amazing that he fessed up. Your right about most of those guys playing about being men of their word/honor.. It's an "old school" hand shake philosophy that still stands today...Course there are a few "soiled" ones here and there, but they get culled pretty quick I would think.

I'm sure 99% of the men on the tour would have fessed up about this. sure there are a few bad apples.

BUT... I wonder how many people would have even realized that it may be a prototype ball? He said he didnt even realize til that night because he's a nut and goes through his bag every night.

You have to understand this game to get why this happened. The ethic of the honesty in this game IS THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS. You can suck at it, be an unbeatable clutch pro, play it 50 years or 25 minutes. through enough generations to take it back to the stick and stone of the cavemen or have picked up your first club today........

But if you cheat or violate the rules knowingly without fessing up and paying the consequences.

You are banished for all eternity to a hell more suffering than having liquid lava poured in your eyeballs til infinity expires.......

........and of course Morty is waiting for you with a Giant Ass Whupping Paddle and a full Monty smile asking you "What Took You So Long To Take That Two Stroke Penalty..........." as he pummels your behind to the tune of Theby's Love Me Two Times" for century's to come.

DONT CHEAT NOTHING IS WORTH IT

He'll still make $200,000+ this year. He'll play a few less tournaments which will probably be good for him and be the feel good story in every tournament he's in and make up much, if not all, of the difference he'd have made from those other tournaments in endorsements.

I remember when Jennifer Capriati came up, she was the next golden child. She had all the upside in the world and was looking at major dinero in her future. On several occasions I remember her telling the chair (umpire) whether balls were in or out. Capriati herself was overturning calls, that originally went in her favor. The whole tennins world went even more ga-ga over her.
Let's just say after she crashed and burned (on drugs etc....), that I don't remember her doing that anymore.
It's easier doing the right thing when the affects of it aren't life altering. Like the boys said, Do you think he would have done the same thing if there was alot more at stake?

Golf = Tradition, for the most part. Cool story and its what I also love about the game but at the same time get pissed about when I am playing at this local course and get paired up with some of the regular a-holes who don't respect the course and game. Its becoming more prevelant every year. Cell phones on the course yaking away during a round, not fixing divots, talking while on the tee box etc etc..

In many sports, cheating is glorified..

" He got away with a hold there..great play"

" The ball was trapped but he sold the catch to the umpire"

"Gaylord Perry: HOF"

I find that a single 6 iron to the shin usually stops violations of etiquette on the tee box. Of course the newer generation clubs being both light and strong some times require 2 half swings in a motion similar to a full pitch.
