Default Swiss Skydiver: Horse of the Year?

Obviously, Breeders Cup will play a huge role here but here is her resume so far.

9 starts, 5 wins, 2 places, 1 show
Wins: G2 GP Oaks, G3 Fantasy, G2 Santa Anita Oaks, G1 Alabama, G1 Preakness
Places: G2 Bluegrass, G1 Kentucky Oaks
Show: G2 Rachel Alexandra

She currently has more graded stakes wins than most of her competition has starts this year. Tom’s d’Etat has 3 starts. Improbable and Maximum Security have 4 starts. Tiz the Law has 5. Authentic has 6.

If she wins at Breeders Cup, wherever she decides to run, I think she’s got a pretty good case.

You’re right that the BC will play a huge role. If she wins the Distaff she will get some votes and deservedly so but Improbable or Tiz the Law winning the Classic should get them HOY.

Now if they run her in the Classic (not what I’d do) and she wins than she is definitely HOY.

Even with her win yesterday it was only her 2nd grade 1 win and Tiz the Law and Improbable both have 3.

Not winning HOY won’t diminish what a fantastic year she has had and McPeek deserves a bunch of credit for not ducking anyone and running her. She’s been a pleasure to watch.

Pretty much agreed. I think if Authentic, Tiz the Law, or Improbable win the Classic then they are pretty much a lock to win Horse of the Year. If Maximum Security or Tom’s d’Etat win, I think Swiss Skydiver would have a shot, assuming she wins her race at Breeders Cup.

I guess we’ll see how it shapes up as I’m not sure all the horses above will even run in the Classic.

Forget HOY. As of now, I don't even think she is a lock in her own division. If Shedaresthedevil wins today at Keeneland and beats Swiss Skydiver in the Distaff, I think she is champion 3yo filly.

That’s a possibility.

I would think that Shedaresthedevil losing the Spinster today would take her out. But if Swiss Skydiver goes in the Distaff and Shedaresthedevil again pulls an upset, that would give her a 2-1 edge. Interesting choice. I think McPeek is leaning to the Classic because of the distance but an added benefit to her going there is that it probably locks up the division title no matter what happens in the Distaff.

The division is locked up my man. Nothing Shedaresthedevil does the rest of the year will matter.

Probably right but I'd feel weird voting for Swiss Skydiver if she lost to the same horse in their two biggest meetings. It would be almost like voting for Easy Goer over Sunday Silence.

Well we will never find out. Shedaresthedevil is going “on vacation” until Oaklawn.
