so great, and i see the maggot therapy...i always wondered if anyone tried that, and now i know. it sounds so gross, but it works so well when you're dealing with infected tissue.

Never thought I'd say I liked maggots (yuck..) but in this case I love 'em!

What a miracle it will be if this horse pulls through everything he's been through.

i read a book about them using maggots in the 1800's to treat wounded soldiers. they used leeches too, and still do..so i always wondered about maggots.
they won't eat the good stuff, just the bad.

damn. that's too bad that he fought so long, and all for naught. have to say, every time i saw there was an update to this thread, i was afraid of this very news.

such a shame.

Regretfully St Nicholas Abbey has lost his brave battle after suffering a colic this morning. Surgery revealed a severe strangulating colon torsion that was unviable and he had to be euthanized on humane grounds. This is extremely
unfortunate as St Nicholas Abbey had been in terrific form, the laminitis was resolving very well and the fracture had healed better than expected.

Coolmore would like to thank the surgeons, the international experts and all the staff at Fethard Equine Hospital who gave him such excellent care 24/7. We would also like to thank the multitude of well-wishers for all the cards and messages of support for St Nicholas Abbey. He will be buried in the graveyard here at Coolmore.

Nobody learned any lessons from this and this is the problem with money and horses.

seriously? horses are saved quite often because vets know more, and have learned more.
he didn't die from his injury, he died from a twisted gut.

it could have been. he could have had no injury and still gotten colic. horses suffer injuries and never colic. some never suffer injuries and frequently colic.

100% correct and 100% unlikely that the horses issues did not contribute to him dying inhumanely vs. a simple injection to afford him peace
