![]() This is sad news. I always had such respect for Golden Eagle, and after John Mabee died, I was so glad to see them continue to pop up, both as owner (Golden Eagle) and breeders (Betty Mabee & Larry Mabee).
It will be interesting to see if any of Larry's children are interested enough to keep it going, at least in some small way. An insane run indeed! Here's the 10-year-old Bloodhorse article on John Mabee's death. It chronicles, to an extent, where they came from and what they accomplished. I might be wrong, but I don't think any California breeder has won the breeder Eclipse since Golden Eagle, and they won it three times! http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-raci...bee-dead-at-80 Rest in peace, Larry. Godspeed. |

![]() I think I read somewhere that they were the leading owners or breeders by money won in California for something like 16 straight years.

![]() You'd think when something like racing is important to one's parents or grandparents, the younger generation would at least have a fondness for horses and not just chuck it all. Alas, it seems to happen often. I know you can't make "kids" carry on the mantle if they've got their own lives to live, but I hope in this case they decide to continue and we get to see Golden Eagle exist in some form in the future. If it doesn't, it's been a great run.
