Default ... to brighten up even your darkest night...

When Makybe Diva won her thrid Melbourne Cup she did so wearing the bridle of her best friend. Mummify. They had been inseparable.

Smarty had Butterscotch, Seabiscuit had Pumpkin. Roger Attfields horses have their stuffed animals, Amani has her bunny.

Silent Witness had Highlili, Vengeance of Rain had Syllabus, I know Black Caviar and Curtana (she's entered Sunday at Caulfield, by the way) hit the beach together but I don't know that these would count as absolute best friends. Maybe these would be in the spent a lot of time together cause they're stable mates department.

I was wondering, just for fun, which horses have goats or other horses as bffs.

I'm sure there are some famous ones that I've never heard and some fun lesser known stories.

Anyone?

It's not a racehorse, but the horse I ride has 2 turkeys, 5 hens, 1 rooster and 2 kittens. The kittens weren't bought "for" him, but the other buddies were because he's a bad spooker.

The kittens follow us while we're out riding. The horse just started accepting the turkeys and chickens and keeps trying to smell them, but they run away whenever he gets too close so he trots after them.

Thanks to my post, you had an opening to post your overused put-downs of Ernie.

We all walk away as winners here!

Somewhere there is a blog entry about My Miss Aurelia's lucky cat, but I was only able to find the photo:

Sighty, no mocking of Ernie will ever get old.

This seems like a dopey subject -- but it's one that legendary horse bettor and successful horse owner Pittsburgh Phil believed in.

A horse he bought named Belmar had won the Preakness and Belmont Stakes in 1895 (thus making him a dual Classic winner) -- but the horse had fallen badly off of form when he bought him.

'Phil' talks about how he thrived once he hooked him up with a dog.

He utters a line in the following cut that tells you quite a bit about how much the game has changed in 100 years.

Sorry Steve, I'll ease up.

To be clear, it wasn't a put down. I'd love to have Ernie posting again.
