Oh geez, that's the cutest pic ever. The little guy reaching up to his mom.

So glad mom and baby are doing well. Oy, is he cute! Congrats to Rachel and her connections.

Eeek.

Johnny Avello, odds-maker to the stars at the Wynn Las Vegas, tells Countdown that Sunday’s newborn Curlin-Rachel Alexandra baby has been installed as a 60-to-1 proposition bet to make the 2015 Kentucky Derby starting gate (1-to-1000 proposition he doesn’t).

Hmm. If you think about the odds that any one horse makes the Derby starting gate, 60-1 is actually substantially better than most, isn't it?

I have always wondered this so I guess now is as good a time as any to ask. Sorry if it is a dumb question but I am just trying to learn about TB industry as a whole and not just looking at a program and the race itself.

how is it determined who the owner of this new born colt is? Is it the Jackson's who own Rachel and Curlin? Is it the Farm where she was bred and delivered the colt? Or is it an owner who essentially invested in the unborn colt once Rachel was in foal?

Typically it will be the owner of the mare.

Gorgeous boy. Looks a lot like his momma, of course I'm probably projecting because he's bay. I'm curious what Curlin's imparted physically. Taco's the only one raised by RA who let him be pretty independent so I wonder how that affected his personality compared to her filly by Bernardini. She was a pretty huge foal so I'm curious how big she is now.

I'm curious as to whether they've made a permanent decision about Rachel's future.

Whoever owns the mare (individuals or group, corporation, etc) owns the foal. Unless other arrangements are made in advance (such as foal-sharing with the stallion owner, etc).

Mare owners pay stallion owners for the breeding (unless they own their own stallions), and mare owners own any resultant foal (again, unless other arrangements are made)

The farm where a mare foals could be owned by the mare owner, or could be a professional boarding farm owned by someone else where a mare is boarded for a rate by her owner. The farm takes care of the mare, foals her out, etc. at the owners wishes per the contract agreement.

Thanks for the info. Obviously in this situation the Jackson's own both the mare and the stallion but if it wasn't the case or if it were another situation would this type of foal be offered in some kind of share offering? I am assuming with this foal's parents being who they are he would fetch a pretty hefty price if offered as a partnership or at auction.

Adding to what's already been discussed, I think Jess Jackson's goals for breeding this colt pretty much preclude selling it unless they're talking about standing him at stud upon retirement which is a long way off (knock on wood). If Barbara decided to, I'd be very surprised. It's not like they need the money, and she knows how much the idea of this foal meant to Jess.

I assume Lane's End has the majority share in Curlin, but I could be wrong. Does anybody know? I figured Stonestreet retained a portion and has lifetime breeding rights.

Okay, per Ed DeRosa's Twitter: "Got e-mail that @StonestreetFarm plans to release "a statement soon" regarding health of Rachel Alexandra. "Both mare & colt are fine."" I guess they got enough freaked out inquiries they felt they had to say something official.

ETA: Looks like she did go to Rood and Riddle for what DRF quoted as a "precautionary measure" and "pain management related to birth." Barbara Banke said she was just being a "Rachel-chondriac." Can't blame her there. http://www.drf.com/news/rachel-alexa...-trip-hospital

Here's a pic of her with her foal from today: https://twitter.com/#!/StonestreetFa...051520/photo/1 Stonestreet just put it up.

I won't keep posting every single thing of this little guy as if they were baby pictures of my own progeny, I swear, but here's a video Stonestreet just put up on their website of the colt running around. I absolutely do reserve the right to post cute-foal "porn" as a general rule. As far as he's concerned, he just discovered running. First horse ever to do it. It's hard not to smile.
