Lucky Island in Race #8 sunk me. Good comeback in the Place and Show in Race #10. Curlin was tough today, but all odds point to Big Brown at BCC as these two horses battle for HOY GREATNESS.

Good advice. I stopped by the OTB in time to watch race 8. Bad management on my part. I didn't even realize Lucky Island was a 2-1 favorite. I was focused more on race 10. In 9 I bet Proudinsky just because he gave Big Brown a good race at Monmouth.

It was not good betting strategy at all. Some in attendance at the OTB were heckling me for betting LI across the Board. They were calling me junior

The only thing worse than Lucky Island today was the lousy nachos I got at the OTB.

actually, i had a lot of payoffs at arl playing horses across the board-along with some exactas.
of course, none of them were 2-1 tho.....

But in the case of the Place and Show horses in Curlin's race today it worked to my advantage. In a race that many said there is no money to win, the other two made it decent. If Mambo comes in second then there is nothing.

Today is the second time I learned about betting the hard way. At the Monmouth I keyed Big Brown on top of every possible trifecta. After he won, I was so excited to see my payout. I would have never dreamed that I could win a trifecta and lose money.

Oh well I learn more and more each race that interests me.

My net loss was only $4.50. I guess my point was that is not a horrible result if you are willing to take a chance at betting against a huge favorite. Had I bet those same three horses to Win only as opposed to across the board, then that would have been a over 10 times the loss.

In the end I lost money. Not good. I realize that. Trust me, I learned today I will not bet across the board going forward unless I have some FU money to throw at capable longshots from time to time.

I am far from an expert in wagering strategy. I agree that across the board wagering consistently is a good way to lose money.

However, most races present opportunities of some kind. Labeling any type of wager as "good" or "bad" without taking it into context with a particular race(s) is narrow in my opinion. The pick 4 isnt always a good bet and a bridgejumping show wager isnt always a bad one.

totally agree with the place betting, but there is nothing wrong with a solid 25 win/place bet, if you bet something in the 3-1 and up range, and get beat even by the chalk, your still likely to make your money back, plus a bit

In the long run, it's better to key the horse you like on top of an exacta with some longer priced horses underneath, rather than do a win/place bet.
