Default My thoughts on the Hoppers

I follow these and have since I was young. I live about 2 minutes from the track listed as "Mal" in the PP's. Actually it's a fox hunting club.

I like the #2 Maserati and think this may be a breakout year for a new star. 9/2 is fair. #3 Schoodic is also usable in all exotics in every place at 6/1. Likewise for Scorpioncer at 8/1. Bob LeBeau at 5/2 could still have the magic, but maybe the other three may prove too tough, we'll see. These are truly war-horses and you can't really count them out, however, I like the top 3. Same for Demonstrative. Just when you think he's done, he comes back and wins a big race. Have to love all of these jumpers.

I'm going to key on the top 3 and shake in some Bob Le Beau and maybe put Demonstrative in below on a small bit.

Don't fear the jumpers. They are very consistent. They can start your day very well.

The more I look at it, it is the "old guard" vs. the "Young guns". Should be an absolutely great race. If you like American Steeplechasing, you can't miss this one.

Bob ran a big race with a heavy weight impost. Last to first and if you blinked you missed it. Got a $38 exacta, but the 40-1 third runner spoiled my tri.

Not sure what this new configuration does to the races, it does change it. It seems like 1 1/2 miles of jumping then a 6F Turf sprint.

Lets do it again next week !

Joe..

Nice work with Scorpiancer.. Voss was (almost) as happy with Portrade's 3rsd as she was with Bob's win.

Can see why she's happy with that, rn a good race at huge odds. Off my radar. I had high hopes for Maserati and think he's good but just left too much to do too late. Did run well at the end.

Not sure what this configuration change does. Have to think this is well thought out by the NSA. I'm not going to second-guess them.

Is this configuration just at Saratoga or Universal? I enjoy your analysis.

The fence removal stems from Mabou's fatal fall in the Turf Writers Cup 2 years ago. The configuration is for Saratoga & Belmont especially. Will ask Bill Gallo if it's being adopted for the races at MTH, SUF, and PRX. The hunt meet courses are unaffected by this.

Not jumping the final fence has been adopted by NYRA and Parx for 2016. The races at Suffolk have been cancelled and moved to Parx but were rained out last Tuesday. No word if the Parx races will be rescheduled.

Fatal injuries occurred in the NY Turf Writers race at the final fence in both 2014 (Makari - Elizabeth Voss) and 2015 (Divine Fortune - Sheppard). As a result, the final fence will not be jumped.

Mabou - 2011 winner of the NY Turf Writers for David Jacobson is alive and well in retirement.

I'll provide additional updates and selections for future races. However, flat race speed is a premium with this new configuration. Hunt meets typically have 12 - 16 jumps and there are only 2 truly flat courses (Camden, Shawan) besides the race tracks. Now there are 8 jumps for 2 1/16 mile races and 9 jumps with the extra turn in 2 3/8 mile races.

You are absolutely spot-on here, Steve. The fatal fall in front of the grandstand is exactly why they will now run 3f on the flat to the finish.
