Default The Movie Business

Wow, I don't see how some studios stay in business based on their recent releases dismal performance at the box office, they produce crap and nobody goes, some recent examples:
The Black Dahlia...out 19 days, $21,100,000...cost, $50,000,000
Flyboys (a real dog)...out 12 days, $10,300,000...cost, $60,000,000
School For Scoundrels...out 5 days, $9,700,000...cost, $35,000,000
Open Season...out 5 days, $26,300,000...cost, $85,000,000
Compare that to...Jackass II...out 12 days, $54,400,000...cost, $11,500,000
Keep in mind that studios get about 55% of domestic box and the costs are production costs only, advertising can be salty as well! I know they get DVD sales and sell the movies to TV but damn...somebody is losing money here!
A movie like Superman cost $270,000,000 in production alone, it's taken in about $199,000,000 both here and overseas (studios get only about 33% of those dollars) so while lots of folks saw it and it will sell a lot of DVD's...they still need a hundred million more to break even PLUS ad costs!

Well, if they ever really got serious, they could buy some horses.
They'd be walking around in their underwear in no time at all.

well movies cost a whole lot now, and with movies going out on pay per view, dvd, and premium cable much more quicker than they used to. Its just really not worth it to go out to the movies anymore

I'm reading a book you may enjoy, Somer
"The Other Hollywood: An Oral History of the Adult Film Industry"
also there's one I know you'd love~
JJ's "How to Make Love like a Porn Star"

I used to be a big movie buff, but now I find myself reading
even the well-reviewed films, I find to be just so-so
the last great movie was Brazil's "City of God"
couldn't even say the last great one to come out of the studio system
it's not as bad as top 40 music however
Fergie's "London Bridge" I think has to be the worst produced "hit" song ever
somewhere Casey Kasem is rolling over in his grave

I will say this.
Hollywood needs some new blood b/c the ideas have become stale and boring.
like Somer said, this are some real bad movies being put out (by major studios) and Im not sure anyone is held accountable/
this has allowed the independent film moveent to grow.

like Jerry says,
there are alternatives now.
in addition to what he said,
television shows(both network and cable) have improved(now that they are getting out of the whole reality tv movement).
I know this, i have not seen ANYTHING at the theatres over the last year as entertaining as House, Law and Order Criminal Intent, or the 4400.
thats just sad.

hollywood needs to make some changes.
the black dahlia?
are you freaking kidding me.
even the previews could not make that movie look the least bit interesting.

Repent,
agree about the quality of TV, House is a great show! You should watch Fox on Wednesday nights as well (after baseball is over) and give Bones and Justice a try! Those along with Veronica Mars are head and shoulders above most movies! If your schedule doesn't allow, you can watch entire episodes...every episode year to date...of Bones, Justice, Prison Break, and Stand Off on the computer at :
http://www.myspace.com/fox

Heard just for Superman that the cost to make 20 minutes of film for IMAX 3D was around 90 million alone. That is a ripoff until itself. Saw it in IMAX and hated the idea of put your glasses on and take it off at points. Plus the effects weren't that good for the movie. We'll see how IMAX does with Open Season.

Scarlett J - yummy. Yes, can't stand Woody Allen films. I stomached Mighty Aphrodite once just for Mira Sorvino. What a waste
