Default High Finance , confusion

from bloodhorse.

If you're looking for a horse that is bred to love a mile and a half at Belmont, High Finance's paternal grandsire, Deputy Minister, sired Belmont winner Touch Gold; his paternal great-grandsire, Gone West, sired Belmont winner Commendable; his broodmare sire, Conquistador Cielo, won the Belmont by 14 lengths; and his maternal great-grandsire, Vanlandingham, won the 1 1/2-mile Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I).

i read this and yet i see he has not yet run over 8f ??

this is just confusing.

Yeah this horse is confusing. Based on his last two races and his pedigree I think he is definitely worth a play. The fact that he has not run over 8f is a bit of a worry and he might run out of gas in the stretch because of it, but I think he might steal it on the front end, and I think he has a HUGE chance to hit the board.
I just have no idea what the post time odds will be on him. He might become the wiseguy horse & be overbet, or people might toss him becasue of his lack of competition and experience and we might get a nice price on him. Tough to figure.

I don't know about lack of competition, he ran against Bernardini and Showing Up...

I just meant that he has never run in a stakes race. He has faced some good individual horses, but he has never faced an entire field of quality horses. Having your stakes debut in a GI classic is pretty tough.

In most cases I would agree with you, but this is a weak Belmont and very evenly matched....

I hope I'm not wrong, but I don't like him to win. Although he is supposedly bred to get this distance, I'm not seeing that in his dosage profile. I just don't think that this horse has the talent to wire the field when he has never been over a mile before.

Bernardini had never been 2 turns, that worked out okay...

JMO, but I think that Bernardini is a more talented horse than High Finance AND furthermore, when you look at his dosage profile, it is better suited for longer races. Like I said, I hope I'm wrong, but I won't be playing this horse this weekend. I'll take my chances I suppose.

I don't believe in dosage, voodoo if you ask me, Bernardini is definitely more talented than High Finance, but Bernardini is not running and there's no world beaters in here....

You're right about that... it really is anyone's race at this point.

i think dosage has more to do with this race than the Derby.
it is much easier to look for big numbers in the solid and professional categories then it is to try to judge the whole profile.

there are a few good horses in here, with others entered to hopefully achieve the line 'classic placed' on their stallion page. of course you never know, there could be a 'sarava' in the field....

Totally agree with you on that one, Paul.
We both know which one has a 14 right in the middle... (hush).
The Belmont presents something that many aren't bred for.
Heck, flash at short distance at the 2yo sales, and all the "need for speed" won't get anyone a horse that can last a mile and a half.
Might make the breeder a nice price at the auction...but not the required staying (heart).
By the way, if you like paternal grand sire Deputy Minister, take a guess who's paternal grandsire both Big Daddy Ray and Shot o' Bourbon's is....
Yup...Deputy Minister.

Just like no horse with RAN in the dam sire line ever won the Belmont, until Point Given....

Just like no horse with RAN in the dam sire line ever won the Derby, until Barbaro...

This guy who invented Dosage is a Grade A clown and fraud, I can't believe people actually listen to him. I love the way he goes back and adjust his figures to be right, what an idiot he is...

He is a much better horse now than he was then. I think he ran a 103 Beyer in his last. He is going to wire the field.

He is growing on me, I must say. Right now I'm thinking of a 5 horse tri box - High Finance, Bluegrass Cat, Deputy Glitters, Steppenwolfer, and either Jazil or Oh So Awesome or Bob and John...hmmmm decisions decisions

I was at Keeneland the day he won, the track was slow and not favoring speed, his race was impressive...

Agree it's hard to judge a horse that hasn't been further than a mile. fwiw, Pinnacle has High Finance at 9.6 to 1 (fixed odds, "must start"). Hard to say whether you could do better than that with track odds.

I almost completely agree with you! My four favorite horses in this race are Steppenwolfer, Deputy Glitters, High Finance and Bluegrass Cat. I am a little bit scared by Sunriver however. I notice that you didn't even mention him as a possiblity for your tri box. Why are you tossing him?

Can't really see Sunriver winning, he was all out against Lewis Michael, the race was paceless, but it was very unimpressive...
