It is what it is. He knew the rules when he signed. The university had no choice.

Wait - so BYU is supposed to be an entire team of virgins?

No wonder the team played like utter sh!t last night - probably not so much because they missed the 3rd leading scorer - but because a fellow teammate was booted for something they all do - but won't admit to.

I can't think of much that would leave me less motivated than to see a teammate booted for something I'm secretly doing but too ashamed to admit.

New Mexico also beat them earlier in the year. I think part of it was the shock of losing him and part of it is New Mexico has their number. Plus BYU is very overrated.

I agree with Dala. Obviously the rules they have in place are ridiculous. But no one forced him to go there. He made the choice and he made the choice to break them. Now he has to deal with the consequences. If he wanted to bang girls he should have went to another school.

If he admitted to drinking coffee, soda or any caffeinated beverage - he would have also been suspended.

I guess the story could have been even gayer if he was kicked off the team because he was caught on tape sipping a cup of Starbucks.

Never knew Mormons had a thing against caffine.

I hope BYU doesn't win another game the rest of the season so everybody at that school has an inner crisis trying to decide what's more important - a once-in-a-lifetime potential Final Four team or some stupid oppressive religious bullshit Boy Scout oath.

They have a right to be a-holes, but other Americans have a right to say they aren't gunna vote for any of them. Romney has zero shot (but please try again, dude.) Keep Collecting those Silver Medals, Red Ribbons etc. Exactly, what base do they allow before marriage?

Regardless of how silly we think the rules are, what was the university supposed to do in this case? Were they supposed to change the rule because they have a good basketball team?

The player knew the rules regardless of how silly we think they are. If he broke the rules, its his fault and he and the team have to live with it. Its not like this is some tiny, little known contract clause. This is something that everyone in the university knows before they enroll. That's why so many of them get married while they are still in school.

If the school allowed this one to slide and it got out down the road on deadspin the uproar would be massive and could cause irreparable damage. They really have no choice here.

The hypocrisy comes in there because the Mormon Church has major dollars invested in Pepsi.

Gambling is not an issue, in my opinion, because Las Vegas in large part was funded by Mormon bankers.

The polygamy thing is no longer officially accepted by the church. To them, it was a means to an end as so many men died on the trek out to the Great Salt Lake. The ones that practice it now are offshoot sects that are not officially recognized as LDS.

I think the fact they stood by their code and did what they did kind of refreshing nowadays. Don't get me wrong, I strongly disagree with their beliefs on sex, caffeine, etc. But they have rules and they stood by them. They could have done what 99.9% of schools would have done and just ignored it, but they protected their code of ethics.

Obviously this code is important to the students as well, because didn't the player admit to what he did? How else would anyone have found out about it?

Yes, and most anybody (with any common sense at all) will punish them by never voting for a Mormon. They aren't mainstream. So, stay the fk away from being in charge of mainstream people. Period. I give them credit for being arrogant enough to think they should have any job making decisions for mainstream people. They have beach balls. I give them that.
