So much for all the talk of Bushman swerving this...

Obviously CC is out.

Big fan of Rip but ummm... I hope Bushman wins this one. Doubtful but...

Betting Forecast: 8/11 Makfi, 9/4 Rip Van Winkle, 8/1 Poet's Voice, 14/1 Hearts of Fire, 20/1 Beethoven, 50/1 Bushman, 50/1 Red Jazz, 100/1 Air Chief Marshal

Verdict
RIP VAN WINKLE can retain his crown, seeing off Makfi in what might become a tactical race. Although last-year's four-runner affair was a farce, this time around he faces a sterner challenge. A battling Juddemonte International win underlined his class, and the race next time in the Irish Champion Stakes was on unsuitable ground and not run to suit. With Air Chief Marshall in the race connections will be hopeful of pinching the prize, although stablemate Beethoven is certainly no back-number now back over a mile. Makfi is the obvious threat as the best miler around at present. He was superb when beating Goldikova last month, and his sole flop when seventh here in the St James's Palace Stakes came with a valid excuse, however he isn't blessed with a startling turn of foot and the worry might be that he is out-sprinted late on. Poet's Voice, the Celebration Mile winner, and Hearts Of Fire, are no chumps, however the more experienced Rip Van Winkle looks the bet.

Rip has always been a horse whose reputation is higher than his performance. Maybe it was his second to Sea the Stars in the Eclipse last year, followed by two G1 mile wins that have question marks. He won this last year in a 4-horse race versus G2 types Zacinto and Delegator, and his form this year is not as good as his form last year.

So who do you like here?

I do like Bushman so much (well Rip too) and i think he'll improve but I'll take Hearts of Fire to win...

Makfi has taken a some very notable scalps this season - Canford Cliffs, Goldikova, Dick Turpin, Paco Boy,... BUT he ran an absolute stinker on this course in the St. James Palace S. He's getting the 3yo weight-break, so that's to the good. If he doesn't like Ascot, there are several who could do it, Rip included.

So it is established - Makfi HATES Ascot with a passion.

Rip's a good horse, just not a world-beater.

It's Dubawi's year and we're just living in it.

I'm not willing to say Makfi hates Ascot quite yet. He had an excuse when running there poorly last time and yet again, he didn't seem 'right' yesterday, wanting to hang when the pressure was put on him to go forward. On form he had every right to toy with that field.

Slightly disappointing that what probably is just a genuine Gr2 horse in Poets Voice won the QEII.

On this showing you'd have to say that Canford Cliffs would have won as he pleased.

I finally saw the replay and all I could think was nice enough race but interchangable horsies.

Don't know if Canford Cliffs would have won.

If we're going to what if my choice would have been Rio.

As far as being impressed today, White Moonstone did it for me.

Oh and I am soooo happy Colonial won! Just a listed race, but still.
