All the old timers I know told me that it was always a bittersweet win because that was the day that Alydar would truly have beaten Affirmed. I have only seen the replay a few times but I concurred when watching it. The trouble Alydar ran into stopped him dead cold and for him to rerally like that was truly amazing.

That's how I felt. Alydar was flying, and I thought he would have swept right past Affirmed if Pincay hadn't swerved in front. I, like every other racing fan, had been looking forward to that race since the Belmont.
