Default What Beyer Did Big Brown get yesterday....

This will be an awfully short thread but I was curious how low a winning figure he had and how it compared to his other races of the same distance?

I looked but can't find it in it's usual Monday section here.

I dont know why it would be low... the pace was excellent and final time was good. I didnt watch the other races though so I have nothing to compare it with.

Big Brown did not look bad at all.. and considering all the circumstances he raced really well. I just hope hes not a hurt horse!

He looked like he was really struggling through the turn and he gritted it out during the streach. The pace was good (135 for a mile) and Coal Play ran a heck of a race.

Big Brown could have thrown in the towel but he won the race so as I said, with all things of the past 2-3 months considered, he ran real well. IMO

106.

I think it's actually a low number. If you don't split the variant (and there was nothing to indicate it should have been split), that gives Cuba an 85 for the stake race he won, which I don't buy. Even if you go a conservative 90 for Cuba (so a 96 for the Lady's Secret winner), that gives Big Brown a 111.

A lot of the posts on here and the other threads ive seen on this race are making it look like a 3yo runnig a # of 106 with that strong pace is not very good. am i missing something? 106 is a great beyer # for a 3yo

I agree. Not a bad effort, but, the last three races before this one have produced defining moments all at the top of the stretch, the first two saw the horse find another gear, the last saw the horse lose it's transmission, and this race saw something new, just a plodding along to just catch the second place horse. He did not show that spurt of speed we've seen before.

But, not a bad effort, not a great effort...

Unless of course, you look at what Smarty Jones was able to get (118 or so), Afleet Alex (112 or so), Medaglia d'Oro (119 or so), Lost in the Fog (multiple 110+), Bellamy Road (120). I could go on and on. A 106 Beyer puts him on par with such greats of recent years as Brother Derek, Lawyer Ron, Greeley's Galaxy, Sweetnorthernsaint, High Limit, Birdstone, Dynever, Rock Hard Ten, Hard Spun, and Tiago. Still behind horses like Curlin, Street Sense, Flower Alley, Any Given Saturday, and Funny Cide. Fact is clear here. A 106 is not a horrible number. It's even less horrible for a 3yo. But it's nothing even remotely special and it's hardly great. And it's certainly not enough to put Big Brown on the pedastal that so many people wanted to put him on. It's also August. Many of those that I named were able to run their bigger figures much earlier in the year.

Don't forget Sinister Minister. He got like a 160.

And he only needed until April.

I thought the whole race was an eyesore and I hope Music Note goes in the Travers so we can see a real horse.
Wouldn't you want him to continue racing to prove that?

My argument against Big Brown is that he is a good 3YO running against perhaps the worst crop I can remember. Hypothetically, where do you honestly think Big Brown would have finished had he taken on a field of talented runners that competed in last year's Haskell? Namely, Any Given Saturday, Hard Spun and Curlin. Enough said!

doesn't matter what we want. iavarone has said since, what, april i think, that big brown will not run after his 3 yo season. he has to retire and give us future pictures of soundness and ability just like their old man.
