i have a hunch that a big part of the number that were knocked out yesterday are simply people that signed up and didn't play, mainly because yesterday most of the logical, popular picks came in.

This is most likely the answer. Happens everytime NYRA runs its SHOWdown contest. People signup, pay $10.. then forget to play.

I changed my choice from Champagne Eyes to Mama Lula AFTER the second race was over and officially Mama Lula is listed as my selection. Anyone who chose the second and third place finishers in the 2nd, the third place horse in the first and #5 Lockitup who ran out of the money could have changed their selections to either of the winners of the first two races.
