Default Teuflesberg to Hurricane Hall $10,000

http://breeding.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=42320

Quote:
"He should be ready for hand walking in about a week or two," Sanders said about the colt who cost $9,000 as a yearling. "He's really doing well. Looking at him, it's hard to believe he went through this ordeal. He should be ready for test breeding in January."
I realize she's part owner, but Hurricane Hall should keep her away from Teuf.

You wouldn't say that if you saw the care that she gives him.

Isn't he no more than 6 weeks removed from his ankle fusion surgery? He's not even ready to handwalk yet an they're already banking on him serving at stud in 2008?

I realize ultimately he should be able to breed, but it seems a bit risky to rush things when he's still in a very vulnerable state. Some of the new stressors involved with becoming an active stallion could be enough to make him go the other way.

I don't think he had ankle fusion surgery, I believe he had screws inserted into his sesamoids.

If both sesamoids were broken (who knows with the shoddy reporting after his injury--at one point the DRF said that he broke sesamoids in both front legs), then his suspensory had to be completely disrupted as well . Pretty much the only option would be to fuse his ankle.

I think that is putting it mildly. I have no idea why anybody would send a mare to him.
He never demonstrated speed or stamina on the racetrack. In terms of pedigree, I'm not even sold on Johannesberg yet as a sire, let alone a sire of sires.

What's a Teuflesberg? Is he named after a city? a thing? a type of food?

This is hands down the stupidest statement ever posted on this site.

It doesn't make him a stellar prospect but I'll take a stab at why someone might want to send a mare to him. 21 starts, he danced in graded company with horses like Curlin, Street Sense, Scat Daddy, Stormello and Hard Spun, got a G2 win... three reasons he's a better prospect than The Green Monkey right there. Another might be that his 3rd dam is half to Narrate who you might recognize as the dam of Preach and Yarn. I'm not sure if you'd call him a diamond in the rough by any stretch, but he's a semi-precious stone compared to some of those early-retired, little-accomplished individuals out there. Let's cut him some slack. The question isn't why you'd send a mare to him but whether he's worth $10,000. It's not a slam on Teuflesberg to focus on that, it's the kind of discussion all mare owners have.

It's misspelled 'Teufelsberg', which means "Devil's Mountain" in German. This is what Wikipedia had to say:

Teufelsberg (German for Devil's Mountain) is a hill in Berlin, Germany, in former West Berlin. It rises about 80 meters above the surrounding Brandenburg plain, more precisely the north of Berlin's Grunewald forest.

It is an artificial hill with a curious history: it was built by the Allies after the Second World War from the rubble of Berlin during the following twenty years as the city was rebuilt. One estimate for the amount of rubble is about 12 million cubic meters, or about 400 000 buildings.

Teufelsberg's origin does not in itself make Teufelsberg unique, as there are many similar man-made rubble mounds in Germany and other war-torn cities of Europe. The curiousness begins with what is buried underneath the hill: a Nazi military-technical college designed by Albert Speer. The Allies tried using explosives to demolish the school, but it was so sturdy that covering it with debris turned out to be easier

At $10000 he is not grossly overpriced but his immediate female family is pretty soft and his sire line is still a little up in the air. He did run alot but was neither brilliant or really fast. I also dont know how much support he is going to get from home in regards to the commercial market.

Teuf has a pretty nice sireline. Though J'Burg is unproven as a sire of sires (he's only 8!) with his female family and Storm Cat sireline, I would not be shocked if he did OK. I do tend to think that the market flooding that Coolmore does is more harmful in the long run and high class horses are often overshadowed by a huge supply of modest "siblings." That is why several of J'Burgs babies were available so cheap, there are just too many of tem.

Teuf's inbred to State, through Border and (more importantly) Narrate. It's pretty clear that Narrate was a better representative of the family in the shed than Border but Border did throw Northcote Road and Hem. It's also fair to say that Narrate was bred to better stallions, maybe because Claiborne was none to fond of Spectacular Bid once he was clearly a spectacular flop in the shed. From the covering stallions, my guess is that Border was sold mid career. Line was pretty modest as well and again it looks like Claiborne sold he mid career.
Nevertheless, that fact that he is inbred to a very classy mare and had a successful career should earn him a stud career.

Whatever one may think about the connections, this guy has earned it. Not long ago on this board I recall reading many posts about how mis-managed this poor horse was and ideas like "imagine how good he would have been with a real trainer." If that is the case then he "could" have been far better than we will ever know.

Saying someone is "a better prospect than The Green Monkey" isn't exactly saying a lot.
I think there are a BUNCH of horses that are a better value at $10,000 than T-berg. Hell, Point Given is now standing for $15,000, and while he certainly hasn't dazzled as a sire, I definitely think he would be worth the extra 5 grand.
Obviously each individual mare's best match is different, but if you want to find an inexpensive sire inbred to Mr. P, I think there are a lot better options than a horse like T-berg who seems relatively weak in terms of pedigree and on-track performance.

We're just going to have to disagree. It'll probably be years before we know what his foals are capable of anyway by which time I'm sure we'll have forgotten about this thread. Maybe by then they'll have found a surface on which TGM will have excelled.
