The scary thing about this is the Delagate from Laurel that says that horseracing should be more "family-orientated" and that other forms of entertainment dont depend on gambling. I would have hoped with her being from Laurel she would understand that GAMBLING actually takes place at her hometown track. The biggest problem that our industry faces is that so many who have the power to help or destroy us have zero clue about what actually goes on at the track, how it derives it's revenue, and the economic impact that it has. |

The recent Pimlico fall meet was just a stop-gap while Laurel was being re-built. As to the Delegate from Laurel - Chuck, about the only thing those people know in MD is tax and spend. I have an old high school friend that's a State Senator and I have begged him to come with me to Bowie to visit my trainer's barn so he can see what goes on in the morning and how many people are involved. Then I offered him lunch and a trip to Laurel for an afternoon at the races so he can see more people involved. He won't go. I could go into a political rant at this point but this isn't the forum for it. I will say that I am not convinced that slots will go through this year because the Speaker of the House hasn't figured out a way to keep the money from going to racing, and more specifically, Joe DeFrancis. Instead, I can see them failing again this year in order to force Joe to sell his remaining stock in MJC, and to get Magna out of the picture too. If they go through, I predict MD racing gets snubbed in the proceeds department. |
