![]() In the past couple of months, I've really gotten into betting Australian Racing. There is a sire I see a lot that I've never heard of. His name is
Encosta De Lago He seems to be the sire of so many of the horses there, that I felt the need to finally look up some info on him. It seems outside of the U.S. this sire has some clout. Here's some info about him if you've never heard of him- http://www.pedigreequery.com/encosta+de+lago http://www.coolmore.com/stallions/au..._lago/?vid=174 http://breeding.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=38093 The last link I find the most interesting.

![]() I know very little about him, apart from the fact he is like the Danehill and Sadler's Wells of Australia, i think. Or the Storm Cat or AP Indy on Australia for you guys, i guess.
Magic Idol will no doubt fill all of us Australian novices in about this stallion. Fountain of information, that guy.

![]() a Great stallion his stud fee would you believe was 7,000 & then along came ahlingi & things changed was bought by one of the big studs & now has a service fee of 150,000 ,
the foals are usually stocky sturdy animals with great temperaments just about bought 1 for 30,000 a few years ago was one of the last 7,000 lots lost the bid tho & it went for 31,000 alot of the little trainers did really well with him, It was a pity Ahlingi had already bleed when she went to america so was only half herself. Pecking order in Australia 1 Redoutes choice 2 Alihgni 3 Exceed & Excell |

But you're right, there are a lot of Redoutes as well. Dangerous, Be Esprit, Tessa Rossa, Terrific, and Hurricane Sky seem to be other major players you see a lot of. What I notice, is as far as the American handle goes, we'll bet sires we reckognize. You'll see Rock of Gibraltor, Tale of the Cat (Storm Cat), Distorted Humor, and others with reckognizeable names from time to time.

![]() The long and the short of it, with the huge fields, I'm addicted to it. I thinking it would do a lot better in the U.S. if it were in the Daily Racing Form though. Handle would rise huge if they could work an agreement for that.

Makybe Diva Changes from Encosta de Lago to Fusaichi Pegasus by Ric Chapman Date Posted: September 17, 2007 Last Updated: September 18, 2007 Australia's greatest racemare Makybe Diva, who last month gave birth to a wonderful looking and leggy son by Galileo, was going to be sent to superstar stallion Encosta de Lago this year. However, that stallion is in lockdown at Eastern Creek's quarantine facility and it appears he will not get out this year. As a result, the Champion mare's connections have chosen former Champion and Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus as her beau this year. The 3-time gr 1 Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva (Desert King-Tugela) was covered by fellow Coolmore sire Fusaichi Pegasus on Monday in Australia. She won Aus$14,526,500 in purse money while racing and has been labelled the best horse since Phar Lap to race in Australia. http://www.bloodhorse.com/articleind...e.asp?id=40847 Last edited by theiman : 11-24-2007 at 11:32 PM. |

![]() Actually, Encosta's fee is normally a lot higher from memory. Approx $235,000 but was dropped due to the EI.
Its a battle between himself and Redoutes Choice for top honours, but now we have Rock Of Gibrator moving up the ranks fairly quickly. Not a big fan of Encosta myself. |

I've seen more than a few Rock O's running down there in maiden plates and stuff. I also saw a few running at 'Toga this summer in MSW's there (and they did quite well). But they also seem "sprinty". Just based on Rock's choice distance of a mile, I'd bet his progeny at a mile and under.

![]() Just a little FYI for those that might not know-
A mile is a little over 1600 meters. The racing guides available to us through http://www.australianracing.com (who also handles the U.S. simulcast feed) converts the distances to furlongs and miles, so it's easier for us Americans to understand how far they're going. THE RACING GUIDES ARE FREE IF YOU SIGN UP THROUGH THE WEBSITE (with past performances in them). An FYI to understand how Australia runs things is better shown here. It's actually very informative and helpful, and gives and example of a past performance as well. http://www.australianracing.com/inde...3§ion_id=3

![]() Ill take Alinghi over Miss Finland any day. Definately in the minority when i say i dislike the mare, for me shes too up and down in form.
Redoutes definately sires the most wich can go the longer distances, but Encosta the better sprinter. But id take a Rock Of G horse over both of them anyday. Cant half tell where my aliance lies ![]() |

![]() Oh, also for those who dont know, a furlong is equal roughly to 200m. So a 1600m race is a mile, and also known as 8 furlongs.
A straight six, is 1200m down a straight like Flemington. |
