Default Dallas Morning News

Racing analysis section has the last three Rags for each entrant at Lone Star. If you're into the Rags and play Lone Star, 50 cents sure beats the $35 they usually cost!!!

Nice for LS players I suppose... But frankly, it's pathetic to me how they find money for that but couldn't continue to pay Gary West when they had the chance.

You can find Gary West's picks for the races @ star-telegram.com (Ft. Worth's newspaper). Also, Wimp Free racing stables Randy Galloway(partner) is a writer @ the paper. The paper gives out some nice picks on Lone Star.

Was he once with the Dallas paper? At least FW picked him up. He's great when you have him on the radio.

Thx.. I know where to find Gary West, and with due respect to Randy Galloway, am not looking for Lone Star selections... The point was that the DMN cut their budget for racing coverage a few years back when they let West go. If they think their readership is better served by having the last 3 rag #'s for LS runners than by having a widely-respected and award-winning turf writer like West on their staff, they're sadly mistaken.

There are but a small handful of scribes around the game in league with Gary West when it comes to writing about racing with passion, thoughtfulness and clarity. And while it was great that the Star-Telegram jumped at the opportunity to add West to their masthead at the time, they too have limited their budget recently making it difficult for Gary to do his job.

As Phil mentions above, you can enjoy West's commentary on 'At the Races' Wednesday's at 6pm... Along with visits from Haskin and Serling, I look most forward to his segment weekly and greatly appreciate his contributions to the show. Here are links to his last few appearences:

The sad thing about the Morning News is the did there staff trimming the week before the Breeders Cup races at LS. Even with the RAGs the news can not compare with the Star Tekegram as far as Racing coverage. I have been a big West suporter for years. I think he is on a par with Moss. One year when he was with the News they sent hin to one of the political convention and his feature writing and reporting was just a notch below Blackie Sherod.
