Question HELP!!!! A handicapping ?

Say Horse A has a 95 BSF for a mile and Horse B has a 93 BSF for a mile and 1/16, which horse is faster? Is there a rule of thumb to convert (extrapolate?) these figures? Or do I need the final time figures to do the conversion? Please advise. Thanks.

Beyer Speed figures are supposed to be adjusted for track variant and distance. In theory,a 95 Beyer at Blue Ribbon Down going 5 furlongs is equal to a 95 Beyer earned going 9 furlongs on the grass at Keeneland. In your example, the fist horse ran the faster time( about 1 length faster).

In the absence of an error by the Beyer's guys the 95 is faster than the 93. Beyers are just normalized speed figures.

final times mean nothing unless you ran at the same track on the same day and the track did not change...........

To the guy that started the thread, sorry that it derailed.

My answer to you would be that there is no formula to convert those beyers.
Those numbers are in the past and are so close what you really have to do is project forward and try to guess whether these horses run the same, improve, or regress next time. Sorry but there are many factors to consider when trying to unravel that.

So basically no easy answer. The previous race the 95 beyer horse was just a little better but there is enough room for error in the assignment of those numbers that for all purposes you can consider them the same.
