Default Belmont Stakes Day shatters NY handle records; 102k in attendance

Word but there's totally no audience for horse racing in 2014 right. The ratings will be huge for NBC too.

Exciting news and I thought that the NBC coverage was great too...

Haven't been to Belmont in many years, however, the network camera shots of the Park really brought back some fond memories...

To each their own, but the longer I have been a racing fan, the less I can tolerate the NBC coverage. The dumb questions, repeated story lines etc. etc. I personally watch the track feed, particularly in this case since Andy is the best out there, and take advantage of seeing the race and better camera angles of the post parade (I wish NYRA showed the post parade as well as they do at Del Mar) on HD.

Wasn't comparing the different coverages...Just thought NBC stepped up their game in 2014...That's a plus for Horse Racing in general !

Only tuned to NBC to see the actual race. Kept it on the other racing channels as much as possible. That way, got to see racing instead of hearing blather

In retrospect, I thought there were actually 3 decent "interviews/discussions" on the NBC coverage:

1. Of course, post-race rant by CC's co-owner

2. Post-race interview with Art Sherman where trainer admitted that he thought the distance was probably too long for the horse.

3. Disagreement between Randy Moss and Jerry Bailey on the pace of the race and CC's position down the back stretch (Randy thought that the race was over after the half). If you go back and listen, really interesting handicapping stuff.

You might have missed it....

Personally, I found it to be bad reporting to spend more air time with Coburn post-race than the actual winners and celebrating the victory. When they finally interviewed the winning owner, they were digging for a response from Tonalist owner, who thankfully said "No comment." It was a terrible way to end a terrific day and NBC acted as mainstream media so often does.

Yes, but the guy would not shut up!! As someone else noted, even his wife told him to be quiet. The network was obligated to interview CC's owner(s) and trainer after a big story like this. I think they just ran out of time (and with a race following)....

Was anxious for them to leave the race, the hockey game was next.

I agree sightseek, they should have gone to the winners. I'm pretty sure everyone would know without asking how coburn and the others felt.

I agree fully with your take. Media is geared to the sensationalis type stuff and beat it to death.

i also took offense at LL "UNcool J , interview on not wanting to own a horse and the NBC interviewing ditz agreeing with him whole heartedly on how bad it is on a show that is supposed to hilite horse racing.

Also, the guy doing the interviewing is not too good to me, who the H is he anyway ? Not too much knowledge of racing IMHO

I was thinking the attendance would be closer to the Smarty Jones one, especially with all the hype and media build up. Oh well, Sure looked like it on the T.V screen though.

Yeah. Props to the lobster roll people, who were the only concession people who seemed to understand how to keep a line moving.

Per Matt Hegarty on Twitter:

@DRFHegarty: NBC says Bel overnight rating was a 12.9 with 29 share, second-highest of all time, behind 2004 (Smarty Jones), at 15.9/31.

@DRFHegarty: Belmont S. overnight rating up 36% over last TC bid, 2008, and up 180% over broadcast last year, when no TC on the line.
