Dettori and pals face stiff task in Germany By David Conolly-Smith4.53PM 3 JUL 2009 FRANKIE DETTORI, Richard Hughes, Ted Durcan and Darryll Holland all ride in the Deutsches Derby on Sunday - but none of them is on one of the favourites. Dettori rides Hansom, third in Munich on June 1 a short head and one and a half lengths behind Saphir and the Godolphin colt which he rode on that occasion, Peligroso. Durcan partners Quo Dubai who ran fourth in that race, while Holland is on Frantic Storm, third to the Derby favourite Suestado at Hanover last time. Hughes rides Egon, still a maiden after four attempts but a fair fourth behind Wiener Walzer, Oriental Lion and Panyu after making the running until two furlongs from home in the Group 2 Union-Rennen at Cologne three weeks ago. Holland and Hughes are both riding for Cologne trainer Waldemar Hickst, whose string is in great form - but stable jockey Andreas Suborics prefers the only filly in the field Bolivia, who was supplemented last week after finishing second to Miss Europa in the Group 2 Diana Trial. However, Jens Hirschberger may hold the aces with Wiener Walzer and Suestado. Although Wiener Walzer holds the highest rating of the 17 runners, stable jockey Adrie de Vries has chosen the unbeaten Suestado. A three-quarters brother to the Prix de Diane winner Stacelita, this son of Monsun has created a very positive impression in his two victories. Saphir represents the team of Peter Schiergen, who has won the Derby three times this century, and Andrasch Starke, successful five times since 1998, but the form of the Munich race won by Saphir does not look as good as the Cologne form of Wiener Walzer. The Listed race at Hanover won by Suestado over 1m3f on June 1 has - under various names - thrown up three of the last four Derby winners Adlerflug (2007), Schiaparelli (2006) and Nicaron (2005). This could be a great week for Adlerflug's trainer, Hirschberger, who also has high hopes with Irian in the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly. |
