Default Looking for Information on an old favorite horse

Hey folks, not sure this is the proper forum for this but i was wondering if anyone has any idea on the best way to find information on a favorite past race horse? His name was Mythical Ruler, he raced at Ellis Park in the early 80's so i am sure he is dead now but he is without a doubt one of the main reasons i love this sport so much. The best days of my childhood were spent leaning on the rail at Ellis Park rooting for him to beat his nemesis Vodika Collins He had a very productive career, even running in the 1981 Ky Derby. He went to stud in Canada and the last i could find was that he was at Shannandoe Farm. I sent them a letter asking for information but i didn't get any response. If i could get my hands on a picture of him in the winner's circle it would be a treasured posession to be sure. If anyone knows of a source for information on past runners please let me know.
Thanks!

If you call Ellis, they might be able to get you a winner circle picture. I know Arlington has a catalog and saves all their winner circle pictures for some time

I know DRF offers Lifetime PPs for any horse since 1976 for $5. If you purchase it and call the different tracks he won at and see if they can sell you copies of the winners circle pictures or any of the Photo finishes he was involved in. I hope this helps.

Find who the track photographer was, and as Scav says, they'll have this cataloged. You'lll be able to get a photo from them.

You've likely found this link already, but if not it will give you career earnings, record, significant races and lineage. Tip, click the little "i" next to the name to open a window. He won the Stephen Foster at age 4 and age 6.

http://www.pedigreequery.com/mythical+ruler

It's been awhile since I've surfed there, but I think you get five searches per session for free, so search prudently....

Dig around and you can find his offspring. A bunch of them. The last listed is 2002 when your guy would have been 24.

Miracle Alley and a filly named Run for Roses.

Mythical Ruler was trained by Fred Wirth and ridden in the Derby by his son Kevin. Kevin Wirth is a regular on the Bass Fishing circuit and would likely be the best source of info on how Mythical Ruler lived out his days. He'd certainly have access to pictures too...

Default Thanks for the help!

Steve, thanks to you and everyone on here for trying to help. I have emailed Ellis Park to see if they have anything they could send but the idea to contact Kevin Wirth is one i did not think of. I live in Nashville and Kevin was in the paper here recently winning a bass tournament in TN. That is actually what got me stumbling down memory lane again with Mythical Ruler. Not to bore you with too many details but i used to go to Ellis with my dad and mom on days we would get rained out of the tobacco fields during the summer and more often than not one of dad's friends would come along. He was a huge fan of Vodika Collins and i was a huge fan of Mythical Ruler. Dad's friend, Frank was a very astute handicapper and went more on bloodlines and breeding than anything else so he was always telling me "Ruler" was outclassed and it used to make me fume! My revenge was extracted the day that Mythical Ruler won the Govenors Handicap and set a then track record for a mile. Frank, being the gentleman he always was, was gracious and glad to see me so excited. I have thought about those days a thousand times and the memories will go with me to the grave as some of the best of my life. Kids that don't get to grow up doing things like that have no idea what they are missing. Oh and Frank got his revenge on me many times with a horse named Storm Strike which was an early Mike Pegram purchase i believe - he was a win machine! Thanks again to everyone, this is a great bunch of people.

I work with a guy who knows Kevin Wirth (from the bass circuit.) I'll ask him if he can get some contact info for him.

Kenny Wirth, the brother of Kevin, he is a trainer here and is one a friend of all of us in Chucks' stable, I can talk to him tomorrow. I am sure that squirt would love to help with anything you need.

Default Shout out to Shannandoe Farm!

This is a follow up to my post looking for information on Mythical Ruler. The racing gods must have been listening to me as when i went to the mailbox yesterday i had an envelope from Shannandoe Farm responding to my earlier written request for information. Inside was a photo of Mythical from 1987, a copy of the ad that used to run in the stud book and a letter telling me a little about his life after racing. Mythical lived until the ripe old age of 29 and only passed away September 8, 2007, reportedly enjoying peppermints right up until the end. I could tell from the letter that he was a loved and cherished companion on the farm and i couldn't be happier to know that he had a great life after leaving the racetrack. Kudo's to Shannandoe Farm and everyone else in this industry that treats the horse with the honor and respect they deserve. My quest continues to find a photo of Mythical in the winner's circle but even without it it is nice to know he had a great life on a farm where he was loved.

Love hearing about happy endings So glad you found out as much as you did and that Mythical lived out a happy life.
Best of luck to you getting that win picture.. Something tells me you will come across one or two soon.
