Two completely different scenarios. Spooky is a hard knocking allowance/mid to high level claiming horse that has done himself and the game proud. He is still able to compete at that level. If he slips down the claiming ranks (see the multiple Shake You Down threads on this board) people will start to freak out.
Lava Man was at the pinnacle of the sport winning multiple Grade 1's on the dirt and grass. He doesn't look like he is able to compete at that level anymore. Nobody wants to see Willie Mays in a Met uniform again....
Their respective ages are irrelevant.
