Ricardo six-timer puts world-record pressure on sidelined Baze by Nicholas Godfrey ARGENTINA AMERICAN jockey Russell Baze is in severe danger of losing his position as world-record holder in career victories – just two months after becoming the winningmost rider in history. Baze is currently on the sidelines after a spill at Golden Gate Fields on Sunday, and Brazilian legend Jorge Ricardo is wasting no time in attempting to get his nose in front. On Wednesday, he rode six consecutive winners at San Isidro in Buenos Aires, the premier racecourse in South America. Champion on the Rio circuit for more than 20 years before moving to Argentina last year, Ricardo was for many years the world’s leading active jockey in terms of career victories. However, he was beaten by Baze in the race to overhaul Laffit Pincay’s all-time mark in December 2006, when the American rode his 9,531st winner to surpass the Panamanian. At the time, Ricardo was only 27 behind, but he has upped his pace in the last couple of months. According to figures published in Argentina, he now stands just five behind Baze, who leads 9,590to 9,585. Baze is expected to be off for a week after cracking a rib in a four-horse spill at Golden Gate on Sunday. http://www.racingpost.co.uk/news/mas...tory_id=876771 |
