Default Pedigree

What do you think of this guy?

I love his foals, and saw that he had 2 weanling colts selling for a combined average of $60,000. The combined average of weaning fillies and colts (4 total) was $40,000. He looks to me like a good one to breed to if you want to make a profit off of the foal at the sales for these first few years.

his foals may look OK...though 4 is not a great sample...and one filly only brought 6,500....but they are going to have to RUN for him to make a name for himself...
his covering sire numbers are dismal at this sale...and not that great overall...many mares being let go for less than the stud fee...that says a lot about the quality of mare he is getting and unfortunately probably says a lot about the quality of runners he will sire...

Yeah, they are giving quite a deal on his stud fee. I really like the horse though, and while four is a very small sample, the fact the colt's average was 60,000 surprised me. They must be really good looking animals, but from the pictures of his foals on the website, his babies do look terrific.

no...he is priced about where he should be...and one can tell from his sale numbers that even at that price he can't draw quality mares...

that's WAY too many NO BIDS to justify a higher stud fee....the market is not looking for him

No, I didn't mean it like that. I meant that his stud fee is 5K and people are getting him for a lot less than that with a decent mare.

I would shy away from him. Like Bethani said, its starting to be a bubble year for him, the quality of mares he's getting is less than exciting, and the fact there's "deals" to be had, isnt necessarily a good thing, although not that unusual once the foals hit the ground.

Also, if you look at his pedigree, the sires in it tend to have been under-achievers at stud. Doesnt instill a ton of confidence. Although for the record, I like Al Nasr.

The Tapit's are selling really well and im glad to say my dad sold a nice one. People were saying he was slow on the track, but he looks the part, the foals look the part, and most are seeing a nice return on investment. Not to mention he comes from a good stallion producing family.

2 or 3 years ago Arch was being advertised at 5k but Bernie Sams was giving away seasons at 2.5k. What a difference a few years make. Not that Tenton Forest is comparable to Arch by any stretch of the imagination... at least not yet.

Yeah, you're right about the stud deals not being necessarily a good thing, but you never know exactly which cross is going to work. I will say that Arch is a lot better looking sire and a lot more correct in the conformation department than a horse like Teton Forest. If I was going to breed to TF, I would want a mare that was going to improve his hip (croup and hindquarter), and his column of bone a bit.

My fave sire right now (based upon how his foals look) is Readthefootnotes.

The weanlings I saw at the OBS in October looked fantastic. It's kind of ironic that his broodmare sire is Al Nasr. Before you guys bombard me, I don't know if his stud fee is a deal or not, but I'm basing my judgement solely on how his babies looked.

I like Ten Most Wanted better out of that barn, but that's just me.

We've talked about Read the Footnotes before, and you know how much I like him. I think he will be a real "sleeper" freshman stallion. That whole Native Street clan is very useful. What a nice racemare and broodmare she was. A large part of Stravinsky's champion freshman crop success has to be attributed to the class of this line.

You know, he's interesting. He never had enough speed to make me go "I think he'll be a terrific stallion", but his pedigree is loaded with a lot of "hidden" class.

Both TMW and More Than Ready hail from probably the least heralded branch of La Troienne, that of Good Landing. More Than Ready has been a very good success at stud, and I would love to see some of his older daughters find the court of TMW. They would add much needed speed and bring in the best blood of the dam of TMW.

More stallions to discuss-- I enjoy reading this site, though, with my piddling knowledge of pedigree, I don't know if he's right on with his thoughts or not:

American Thoroughbred Review... I visit this site pretty often. Here's the thing with this guy-- I respect him for laying his balls on the table and saying what a lot of people think, but on the same hand, I really dont agree with many of his asessments or "breeding" and "Selection" beliefs. But he does raise some good points from time to time.

Honour and Glory-- I happen to like Honour and Glory and I think he's a pretty safe bet for small breeders. His runners earn their keep and his foals still sell pretty well. Also, many of his daughters are attracting attention from broodmare buyers.

Holy Bull-- Consistent stallion. Rarely gets a big horse, but you really cant complain for the fee. I'd stay away from his daughters as broodmares though. Something about them I just dont like.

King Cugat-- His numbers are a lot better than that site would have you believe. Struggling? Yes. But not horribly.

The one thing I really dont like, is that he goes for some shock value at times and will splay a young stallion because the numbers are skewed in his (the site's) favor for his tirade on not buying or breeding to unproven stallions. Many of the young stallions listed are or will be failures, but many deserve a chance unlike he gives them.

I dont know how you can put a horse on a "worst of" list when they only have a crop or two to race. Ridiculous in my book.

I do like Exchange Rate. I don't think they will win any of the classics but anything under 9f should be good.

Benchmark was a better deal until Bro Derek popped

Have Grand Slam, Gone West & Fu Peg fallen out of favor?

I don't think he's gotten to the expensive sires yet. He did make a guess about which freshmen sires would do best- fun reading.

Loved reading your thoughts on his thoughts, Balletto!
