Default Update on Calder spill Monday

Jockeys Jermaine Bridgmohan, Ray Fuentes and Jeffrey Sanchez escaped serious injury on Monday when Bridgmohan’s horse suffered a catastrophic injury in the last race at Calder.

The apprentice’s mount, Watch Me Flash, broke down in the stretch while on the lead, throwing Bridgmohan over her head and to the ground. As a result of the accident, Fuentes was also thrown from his mount, Molly McGee, as was Sanchez from Aurora Ridge.

Bridgmohan and Fuentes walked off the track on their own accord, but Sanchez was taken to the hospital immediately for examination. Bridgmohan and Fuentes have both returned to ride in races at Calder on Wednesday, but Sanchez is off his mounts due to a swollen right eye.

Sanchez’ agent Bernie Gonzalez said, “He is unable to ride because his eye is swollen shut. He’s putting ice on it, but he can’t open his eye. There’s a big scratch over it. It’s better today than yesterday and he should be fine soon. He’s very lucky and we’re very thankful that he didn’t get seriously hurt.”

It was the first spill for Bridgmohan, 18, who just started race riding this year and is currently the leading jockey of the Tropical Park meet.

“That was my first bad one,” said Bridgmohan on Wednesday. “My back’s sore. I went to the chiropractor yesterday and had some acupuncture. I’ll continue with that treatment until I feel better.

“I’ve never had something like that happen before,” Bridgmohan continued. “I’m trying not to think about it. I watched the replay once and I don’t want to see it anymore.”

Both Molly McGee and Aurora Ridge were uninjured, but Watch Me Flash was euthanized due to the seriousness of her injury.

Good to see the jocks are ok. It was a horrible looking spill. God bless them.

If Bridgmohan had any brains, he would have realized his horse was hurting as she was getting out around the turn and drifting all the way down the stretch, while this pinhead kept hitting her with his stick, until she broke down. Just another stupid bug boy with zero horse sense.

Guess the kid deserved to die for riding his chalk down the lane. If that horse would have been on Polytrack it wouldnt have broken down and Little Bridges back wouldnt be hurting this morning.

Who said anything about the kid deserving to die, you idiot. However, if the kid had an ounce of horse sense, he would have felt his mount going wrong, which she was for at least a quarter mile, without continually pounding on her. Polytrack has nothing to do with it either, this is simply a case of an inexperienced rider that can't even sense when the horse underneath him his sore. Watch the replay before you make stupid comments.

I watched the race, 30 horses a day get out like that horse did without breaking down. Why am I an idiot, because I dont think the kid did anything wrong? He finished a ride on a mount who went off at even money? Its not the riders job to decide if the horse is sound enough to race, thats the trainer and state vet. What do you think will happen to a bug who starts gate scratching horses?

Who said the horse was sore BEFORE the race, and who said anything about "gate scratching" a horse, obviously something went wrong during the race, and a rider with some horse sense would have been smart enough to not continually hammer on it as it became more pronounced.

And another bloodstock agent who thinks they are an authority about horses, or anything, for that matter. According to you and your theories, the horse broke down because it had a lung infection.

Youre an idiot for bashing a bugs ride on chalk. You know what happens to that kid if he gate scratches that horse?

Youre on a kid who is lucky to have survived a spill because a horse broke down. I guess he should have taken pictures before the mount took the track. All you can ask of a jockey is they ride to their fullest, how can you even consider bashing a kid for a horse breaking down?
