NYRA Super Snafu
Was a weird situation the other day where they ran an official on an incorrect superfecta. NYRA did announce the error and paid both, but they could have been more clear on what the remedy was.
As far as I know, it's still unclear whether they split the pool or paid each out as winners and took a loss. The right thing would have been to pay each of them at true payoffs and take a loss. If it was a tote error, you could get them to pay. However, it's not right if you had the correct 4 to split the pot because of a reporting error. That wasn't made clear how it was distributed. They weren't big payoffs and not big pools, so we're not talking tons of money. However, NYRA was quick to announce the problem and to tell everybody they'd get paid, but how ? If I had the wrong payout, I got some free money. But if I had the correct 4, did the payout for those tickets come out of my pool ? Should my ticket have paid a bunch more ? Those are things We didn't know. Mistakes like this are extremely rare. Apparently the incorrect tickets were cashing before they realized. Sometimes if your systems mess up, you have to eat it. Like in any business. Just think we need more explanation. If I had the correct 4 and they paid the incorrect 4 out of my pool, I'd be upset. Or, if they split the pool, like a DH.

Did you contact nyra and ask? Seems they paid out each based on its pool, not a combo and then split it. So...the right thing based on an error they made.

I sent them an email over a week ago and no reply. A Bloodhorse story said the stewards are looking into it, but I'm not sure that involves the payout, but the confusion over the placings. More than likely it's something that would get attention from the State Racing Commission.
Errors happen. There is a lot of moving parts on any race involving humans and machines in order to pay off all these races every day. I just think they should be a bit more forthcoming. They announced they were paying both the incorrect super and the correct one, but never explained where the payouts came from. Was the pool split ? Did NYRA kick in to pay the real winner ? If so, that is something I would commend them on. Even if it was not their fault, pay the customers and sort it out later. These are some of the things in horseracing that I see could be done in a much better way.

OK, that clarifies it and it was the right move. You have to do right by the public and I only wished the PR department had said that sooner. Then they can go back and see what happened. If it was a steward error, those people work for the state, I'd ask for a check. If it was a tote error, the same. If it's a NYRA error, you learn from it, adjust and move on.
This was an extremely rare case. I've only seen this maybe once before and that was many years ago with old technology. I think it was a missed opportunity for NYRA to release an immediate press release. "Hey, we had a confusion today on the superfecta and announced official the incorrect order. We have paid the full payouts on the incorrect, original order and the revised order. NYRA has put $50,000 into the pool to make sure everybody who had the winning tickets were fairly paid. Our customers come first." Was a great opportunity lost.
