Default Dennis Carr recovering after surgery

"Jockey Dennis Carr underwent head trauma surgery at Highland Hospital in Oakland, Calif., Sunday night after being seriously injured in a starting gate accident in the fifth race at Golden Gate Fields. His mother, Joan Carr, said his riding career is over.

“He was in surgery all night – for six or seven hours,” the 46-year-old jockey’s mother told the Paulick Report. “Doctors found brain bleed. He has a severe head injury, and they had to remove a portion of his skull.

“He made it through the surgery,” she added, “but his racing career is over. He’ll never ride again.”

does he know that? or is that just his mother hoping he never rides again? if he makes a full recovery, he may well go back to it.

Guess that remains to be seen but he is missing part of his skull now. He is sitting up and talking so that's always a good sign.

they usually put that piece back when swelling goes down-it's temporary. i just know it said 'full recovery' which makes me wonder how they'd know his career is over. he might not think so!
hope all goes well for him.

Regardless of whether he rides again or not, I hope he makes a full recovery...sounded very serious.

Best wishes to Dennis (the menace) Carr and family. Rode in NY a long time ago. Think his family were owners of the renowned Brennan and Carr in Brooklyn, where i downed many a great roastbeef sandwich.

Jockey Carr has surgery; full recovery expected
By Chuck Dybdal

Jockey Dennis Carr underwent surgery Sunday night after sustaining a head injury when thrown from his mount in the starting gate prior to Sunday's fifth race at Golden Gate Fields.

Carr was ejected out of the back of the gate when his mount, Sharpton, reared wildly in the gate. Carr was able to walk following the fall but complained of a headache when he was taken by the track ambulance to the track's medical center, where track physician David Seftel sent him to Highland Hospital in Oakland for a CT Scan.

Doctors at Highland performed surgery Sunday night to remove blood from Carr's brain and to relieve cranial pressure.

Carr was reported as sitting up and "recovering very well" on Monday morning.

"The doctors at Highland said the surgery was a complete success and that there will be a full neurological recovery with no residual brain damage,” said Seftel. "Dennis is sitting up, alert, and recovering very well this morning. He is expected to make a full recovery.”

Carr is expected to remain in the intensive-care unit for one or two days before being transferred to a regular floor.
