Sacred Kingdom Fights For Life

Written by Carl Di Iorio

Champion sprinter Sacred Kingdom, pictured winning the 2009 Hong Kong International Sprint (1200m), is currently fighting for his life after suffering a bout of colic on Thursday.
The world’s undisputed champion sprinter Sacred Kingdom is fighting for his life after suffering a bout of colic on Thursday.

The Australian-bred Hong Kong-based sprinter was due to depart Hong Kong airport for Japan in preparation of the ¥202,350,000 (approximately $2.4 million) Group 1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen (1200m) on March 27 at Chukyo Racecourse.

However the flight never departed as the six-year-old showed signs of distress prior to takeoff.

Sacred Kingdom was treated with sedatives on the tarmac however his condition deteriorated dramatically soon after.

“By the time the chief vet from Hong Kong Jockey Club arrived, the horse needed immediate surgery," trainer Ricky Yiu told The Age.

That surgery has been performed with the next 24 hours of critical importance to Sacred Kingdom’s future.

Depending on the success of the initial surgery, a second operation may be required.

Purchased for $200,000 by Yiu at the 2005 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Sacred Kingdom has won 15 times from 23 starts accumulating over $6 million in prizemoney.

While Sacred Kingdom has always been a sprinter blessed with talent, it has been the past two seasons where the gelding has elevated himself up into champion status with amazing consistency against the ill-fated Absolute Champion before winning last year’s Krisflyer Sprint ahead of Rocket Man and than the Hong Kong International Sprint.

Sacred Kingdom last raced on February 21, defeating Sunny King in the Group 1 Chairman’s Sprint (1200m) at Sha Tin to ensure he has won five of his last seven starts.

OMG! Please post that he is OK. On a related note, does anyone know how Kip Deville is doing?

Sacred Kingdom out of the woods
AAPFrom: Monday, 22 March 2010

Champion sprinter Sacred Kingdom is making a rapid recovery from a life-threatening bout of colic and might even race again later this year.

Trainer Ricky Yiu Poon-fai said the danger period for the gelding had passed and Sacred Kingdom would return to his stables later this week.

"It's a relief. He's out of danger and he's a tough boy - you wouldn't know anything had happened to him at all," Yiu told the South China Morning Post.

"He's walking around and looks bright again.

"He'll stay in the hospital at Sha Tin until Monday then come back to my stables, but the vets are totally in charge of Sacred Kingdom's feed for the time being."

Colic can be fatal but the surgeon who operated on Sacred Kingdom to untwist his affected section of bowel said the fact the champion was able to be treated quickly probably saved his life.

Yiu confirmed Sacred Kingdom's prognosis was good and said he hoped to have him back in time to defend his Hong Kong International Sprint crown in December.

"It's probably better for him to have a longer break and get completely over it but they are actually quite optimistic that we will get the horse back," he said.

"Hopefully, he can recover top form and we can target the international sprint again."

Came on to post this but oh, seeing that post about Kip....

Okay well the good news is this...

October 1st at Sha Tin...

At first i thought it was going to be a welcome back ceremony but it appears he'll run in the Sha Tin Sprint Trophy (a race he had won back in 2007).

Thrilled to see him back!

For anyone who wants to watch his 15 wins (15-3-1 from 23)...

Well aside from an awkward start where he nearly hits his head, he looked good.

Barrier trial, batch 3 (Able One lookin good too).

Sacred kingdom runs on Oct. 1st.

(It's being billed as the day "the champion rejoins the field". Damned right!).
